Although yesterday’s election results are not what we had expected and hoped for, the journey that began last year will continue. For now, words cannot adequately express how grateful I am to everyone who believed in my vision for better and safer schools for all Miami-Dade. This includes my team of dedicated volunteers and supporters, whose boundless energy and enthusiasm was not only evident but contagious. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you so very much for your commitment and dedication to our movement—but most importantly, for your belief and trust in me.

Meet Dr. Justin Koren
Dr. Justin Koren has served our public school district for 15 years, as both a teacher and school administrator. A proud graduate of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, and a Miami Herald Silver Knight Award Winner, Dr. Koren is passionate about education and works tirelessly in support of children from all walks of life.
A graduate (and former Student Government President) of the inaugural class of Coral Reef Senior High School, Dr. Koren earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Arts from Boston University; earned his Master of Science in Education with specialization in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University; holds certification in Change Leadership from Cornell University; and earned his Doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in Educational Research, with specialization in Learning Environments and Student Attitudes, from Curtin University in Western Australia.
Following the horrific tragedy at Southwood Middle School, in 2004, Dr. Koren moved back to Miami-Dade from New York City to write and produce Defining Code Red, a stage play that explores the devasting, enduring effects of school violence that pervades long-after the media moves on. The play was heralded the “gutsiest play performed in South Florida” and awarded Best New Drama of 2007 by the Miami New Times.
In 2005, as an English Teacher at Southwood Middle School in Palmetto Bay, Dr. Koren was immediately identified as a rising star and named the school’s “Rookie Teacher of the Year.” In 2009, he joined the faculty of South Dade Middle School in Homestead, where he worked primarily with at-risk students to improve the school’s academic performance and overall success.
