Alabama Barn Quilt Trail

Alabama Barn Quilt Trail

Alabama Barn Quilts are springing up to stitch together art, agriculture, architecture, and local culture.

Barn Quilts are popping up on historic barns across the nation. Begun in 2001 by Donna Sue Groves in Adams County, Ohio, barn quilts are helping to preserve an important piece of American heritage, and the trend is a boon for rural tourism. As with quilting, the creation of barn quilts and ultimately a barn quilt trail, stitches together art, agriculture, architecture, and local culture in an ende

This week we are welcoming Ray and Dorothy Hayes to the Alabama Barn Quilt Trail. They chose a block they are calling the Barefoot Bear Paw, an homage to Dorothy’s mother whose maiden name was Barefoot. Her mom and her mom’s sisters were quilters and taught Dorothy to quilt as well. She has many quilt treasures as a result. Their block is on a newly built barn, a building for storing their beekeeping equipment. Their honey is called Hayes Honey Jar.

The address for this block is 560 Arbor Acres Road in Albertville. Thank you to RussandBrenda Brown Gunnells who spearheaded this quilt block. And many thanks to the Alabama State Council on the Arts for their generous support and grants to the Alabama Barn Quilt Trail!

I am the founder of the Alabama Barn Quilt Trail. That means I saw the idea somewhere else (Tennessee) way after it was originally thought of and developed in Adams County, Ohio, by Donna Sue Groves. I did a few things to get the Trail started in Alabama with the help of several organizations. But mostly, it was me. Then Dale and Lisa Robinson read about it and wanted to a part of it. THAT is when things really started happening!!!

Dale Robinson is the BRAINS and BRAWN behind the Trail!! He is the one who has drawn the most blocks(originally he drew ALL of them). He has answered your emails and questions. He has been the computer guru behind all of this. He has poured his heart and soul into the Trail. He has put our name and mission out there to publication after publication, building the Trail to what it is today.

Dale has had health issues but has also worked diligently helping family and friends with their needs. He never complains. He just keeps working and doing.

I am heartbroken that Dale is stepping away. I understand. I support his decision. But I am heartbroken for the Trail and for myself! I know I can still call on Dale and if at all possible, he will still be there to help in anyway he can. I know I will consider him a very dear friend. For always.

You’ve been the BEST, Dale!! You made it happen!! Thank you for all you have done! We will all miss you greatly!!! ♥️💔♥️

Barn Quilt Friends,
Way back in 2016, my mother-in-law read an article in our local newspaper about a local woman, Regina Painter. Regina was trying to get a fledgling art project off the ground. She had named her project the Alabama Barn Quilt Trail. She had enlisted the help of a UNA art student named Naomi Skye and had secured a grant from the Local Farmers Federation. My mother-in-law was intrigued by the article and brought it to my wife. A lot of water has passed under the proverbial bridge since that fateful day. Suffice it to say we jumped into the Trail with both feet and hit the ground running. The Alabama Barn Quilt Trail has grown beyond any of our wildest dreams to become the most popular Barn Quilt Trail on Facebook. Our success is the result of hours upon hours of hard work by a very small group of dedicated volunteers. Volunteers have come and gone over the years, but the Trail has continued to grow. If you had asked me back in 2016 that I would have a clue what an Ohio Star or a Grandmothers Flower Garden was I would have told you that you were crazy. I have learned so much since then and have met so many wonderful people. I have made friends that I would have never met if it weren’t for that one newspaper article. It truly changed my life. I became President of the Alabama Barn Quilt Trail and have enjoyed every minute and have loved all of the wonderful people who have made this project what it is. I can’t say enough about Regina Painter and all of our other Volunteers. One special couple I want to mention publicly is Russ and Brenda Gunnels. Their tireless efforts to bring the trail to the eastern side of our beautiful state have been instrumental in our continued growth. They have become dear friends to Lisa and I over the years.
I’m not sure how many of you know that I was diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease back in 2018. Thankfully the disease has progressed very slowly for me. My Dad had it as did his mother. It is something I live with, but I have refused to let it get me down. I was told by and old dear friend that Parkinsons is something that you won’t die from, but you will die with. I have taken that to heart, and I keep working and doing all that I can to keep the illness at bay. It has become apparent to me in the last few months that I need to take a step back from my work with the Alabama Barn Quilt Trail. The Trail is suffering from my inability to keep up with day-to-day updates. I apologize to all of you for that. I will be stepping town effective immediately as President of the Alabama Barn Quilt Trail. I need to focus on my health and other personal responsibilities. I have one final request from you! Keep “Following”, “Liking” and “sharing” the Alabama Barn Quilt Trail with your friends. You have made us what we are! Thank You so very much for your continued support!!

Dale Robinson

We also want to welcome Sean and Carla Kennamer to the Alabama Barn Quilt Trail! Sean’s mother, Mala a long time quilter, is making a monkey wrench quilt. Thank you to the Alabama State Council on the Arts for the grant and support!

The Alabama Barn Quilt Trail is happy to welcome the Cline- Morgan family. This quilt design is based on a family Lone Star quilt. Grandmother Cline was an avid quilter, and the Lone Star quilt is a favorite of her granddaughter. When you stop to see this quilt, be sure to say hello to their pasture pets, Bailey and Elvis, the donkeys!!

This great new addition is located at 440 Coleman Road in New Market.

We are always excited to keep watching the Alabama Barn Quilt Trail grow!! And we are grateful to the Alabama State Council on the Arts for the grants and support they give!

Next we have a very unique block to tell you about based on a family heirloom quilt. We don't have anything like it on the trail!! It belongs to Roger and Jan Seay and was pieced and hand sewn by Jan's grandmother, Molly Blackmon in the 1950's. It is absolutely stunning!. Thanks to our own Russ and Brenda Gunnells for bringing this beauty to life! And thanks to the Seays for their interest in the trail! And for their patience! You can visit this stunner at 1930 Bethsaida Road, Boaz, AL 35957. As always we would like to thank the Alabama State Council on the Arts for their generous support of the Alabama Barn Quilt Trail!

The next new addition to the Alabama Barn Quilt Trail today belongs to Todd, Raysha, and Hazel Rhea at Rhea Farms. The Rhea family owns and operates a babydoll sheep farm in the Oakland Community near Florence. You can see their colorful block at 3575 County Road 15 Florence, AL 35633. Raysha designed this square herself in memory of her grandmother and her love for quilts. It was painted at our recent Florence workshop by volunteers. Thanks to our volunteers and to the Rhea family for their interest in the trail! And thanks to the Alabama State Council on the Arts for their generous support!!

I have several new additions to the Alabama Barn Quilt Trail to tell you about today. The first of these belongs to Mr Freddie Ashley. His barn is located at 16107 County Road 33, Killen, AL 35645. Mr Ashley chose this "Knock Your Socks off Star" variation in shades of blue and gray to match his barn. It compliments his barn very well. It was painted at our recent workshop in Florence by our volunteers. We couldn't do it without volunteers and we have had a lot of interest lately. We would like to thank each and every one for your time. We would also like to encourage anyone who would like to volunteer to contact us!! We would love to have you onboard! ANd as always we would like to say thank you to the Alabama State Council on the Arts for their generous support!
