We had our annual members meeting yesterday & the board was very pleased with the energy and ideas that were shared! A couple of people signed on to be rangers or area coordinators for the next year, and the outlook is good for our mission to continue educating the public and helping the loons survive in Michigan!

Great video of loon on nest…
I saw this first hand ! Boat barely missed Mom & chick turning at the last second.
We waited till black flies were done but trying native mint plants on the nest to help repel. Added privacy screens as nosy boaters can distress a nesting loon. Our loon couple supervised.

Juvenile loons still hanging around on Michigan lakes with this years delayed fall weather.
Some good information!!
We are getting early reports from some of our loon rangers. An exciting note is that we have TWO reports of loon pairs with THREE chicks!!! That is fairly unusual! We wish the chicks well and hope they all stay safe all summer and are able to fledge in the fall! How are your loons doing?
Jen has some amazing photos of Loons!!
A client recently purchased this print from my website, and had it framed to hang on her wall. It turned out lovely! If you'd like to consider ordering, it can be viewed at my website link below.

Loons Blessing' (Maang with Chicks) Lionel Kakegamic 2002 Original Native Woodland Art $760 CAD
Acrylic on paper, 15x22 inch.
Lionel is an established Northwestern Ontario First Nation Artist. Although he was born in Kenora in 1965, he was adopted by Kenny and Martina Kakegamic of Sandy Lake, into a family full of artists. He grew up on the land, and carries his experience of nature into all of his paintings. Lionel had his first show in Red Lake when he was 24. Since that day he has continued to sell his art throughout North America and Europe.
His paintings, generally acrylic on canvas (he has done some murals, too) retain the feel of the Woodlands tradition while adding a sense of symmetry and edginess. Every one of his paintings evokes a sense of the peace, the solitude, the purity and the strength of the North.
Lionel has returned to his roots and now lives at Wauzhushk Onigum (Rat Portage) First Nation, just on the eastern edge of Kenora.
Lionel Kakegamic original artwork is sure to be a family heirloom or a worthwhile investment!
Reasonable offers will be considered.
Reminder your fishermen friends to retrieve their discarded or broken fishing line!l

Rising spring water, the reason for floating nests…
It's never too early to start planning for spring & open water fishing (especially on a rainy day like today! ☔️) Go shopping at your local tackle store & check to see if they have tungsten or other lead-free sinkers & jigs! Lead-free is loon safe!
The lakes around Michigan are much quieter with the adults gone for the winter. Many juveniles have left too. How many of you still have the young ones on your lake?
Celebrity breakup news is just better when it's a loon couple.
I was a little heartbroken earlier this year, when it was reported that the world's oldest loon couple had parted ways after more than two decades. But I was also kind of tickled to read about the whole, messy situation.
This week, we get an update on the estranged duo. The female loon, known as Fe, made some big news this week, when she hatched a record 40th chick. Pretty good for the oldest documented loon in the world, at 36 years old.
While Fe was mating with her new guy, her old partner (known as ABJ) has been living the bachelor life. We wish them both happiness and plenty of fish.
