Gotta get on a stump for just a second. It has been brought to my attention that our program at BRTC is not a quality program because we are not teaching the same material or curriculum as the Arkansas Fire Training Academy. Well here’s the deal, We use the IFSTA Fire Fighter Essentials Manual, 7th Edition, very same text book as the academy for Fire Fighter 1 and 2, (which the academy administers the test for.) We have the Arkansas Forestry teach the Wildlands class for our students. They take the Arkansas Fire Academy Emergency Medical Responder course (which the academy comes and administers the test for.) We teach the Hazmat Awareness and Operations as Directed by the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management (which the academy administers the test for.) And last but not least we teach the Arkansas Fire Academy’s Driver / Operator at the end of the 13 week program after the students have passed FIREFIGHTER 1 and 2 tests. (The Driver/Operator course test is administered by the Arkansas Fire Academy.) IN FACT, EVERY TEST OUR STUDENTS TAKE FOR CERTIFICATION IS ADMINISTERED AND PROCTORED BY ARKANSAS FIRE ACADEMY INSTRUCTORS FROM THE JONESBORO SITE OR FROM OTHER SITES FROM HERE IN THE STATE. We have SEVERAL adjunct instructors from across North East Arkansas from departments like Walnut Ridge, New Port, Paragould, Jonesboro, West Memphis, Osceola, Pocahontas, Ash Flat, Cave City and others come and help with the Structure Fires 1, 2, 3, 4 and Exterior Fires. We have smaller number classes which give the students more rotations in the burn buildings and more hands - on opportunities as well as more one on one instruction. These pictures are from our Fall 2023 class which will be wrapping up in a couple of weeks. Not only will these students get their state certification (minimum standards) but will also receive 23 hours of college credit. IF THIS IS SOMETHING YOU MAY BE INTERESTED IN, give me a call at 870-248-4129 or email me at [email protected]
Thanks!!

Last day of Structure Fires for the Black River Technical College Firefighter Essentials class is in the books! It always amazes me when we start this section of the training how you take a bunch of people from different areas, different age groups and different backgrounds and form them into a cohesive unit. They work together like a fine tuned machine! Before too much longer we will be finished with them and they will take their state certification exams and be ready to head out into the Fire Service and serve the public by “Saving Lives and Protecting Property and the Environment!” Great work guys!

What are some ways the Fire Service Programs at Black River Technical College can benefit you?
1. Provide a pathway to achieving the certifications required to become a full-time firefighter in the State of Arkansas. Also, provide a pathway for already employed firefighters to become the best they can be in their careers by promoting to leadership rolls within their department through higher education.
2. By becoming a firefighter, you will be regarded highly in your communities. Firefighters across the nation are respected and admired by the citizens they protect. They are recognized as heroes to the young and old alike.
3. When you become a firefighter, you will enter into a family of brothers and sisters with the people you work with. Firefighters spend a lot of time together and develop close friendships with each other. This feeling of “family” is found all across the nation, even amongst strangers who are firefighters.
4. A career in the fire service gives you financial security through steady employment. Most departments work a 24 hour “on” and 48 hour “off’ schedule. This gives you time away from work to be with your family and to do other things that interest you.
5. This job security also provides economic freedom which helps you with everyday needs such as housing, food, clothing and other items.
If this sounds like something you want, contact Fire Programs Director Alan Haskins at 870-248-4129 or email at [email protected]
