Halloween is here, and it's the perfect time for sweet treats! 🍬 But remember, not all candy is created equal when it comes to your braces.

Be mindful of the types of treats you choose to munch on because they might cause problems for your wires and brackets.

Hard candies like lollipops and suckers can cause brackets to break off and wires to get bent out of shape. Opt for softer treats like chocolate bars (without caramel or nuts), marshmallows and cookies. Your smile will thank you! 😊

We had the pleasure of speaking with Perla and Lisa, two of our Hispanic customer experience team members, to learn about their experiences and the impact they make on our patients.

Lisa's strong work ethic is no surprise. Inspired by her father, one of Oklahoma City's first Hispanic business owners, she has always strived for excellence. Today, Lisa serves as an assistant manager of our doctor scheduling team, ensuring a smooth experience for our customer experience representatives, who are often the first point of contact for patients.

Also on Lisa's team is Perla, our doctor scheduling coordinator, who reviews treatment plans with patients and schedules appointments with the dentist – all in the patient’s preferred language. While translating dental terms can sometimes be tricky, our bilingual team members' commitment to providing patient-centered care shines through. Inspired by their passion and hard work, we are proud to have them on our team!

It may seem like flossing is impossible with brackets and wires attached to your teeth, but it’s not difficult at all. It just takes a few extra steps.

Here are some helpful tips from your orthodontist on how you can still floss with braces.

First, get a floss threader. This is a small, thin, and flexible tool with a large loop on the end of a handle. Your orthodontic clinic should provide you with some, or you can find them at your local pharmacy.

You will want to use waxed floss to prevent it from getting caught on brackets while you’re flossing.

Make sure you have a long enough piece of floss, so you don’t run out and have to pull more pieces. Try to get about 18 inches, or a foot and a half, of floss. That may seem like a lot, but all that floss with be very useful for flossing past the wires.

Thread dental floss through the loop, and if you want to, tie it on.

Then, Insert the handle end of the floss threader in the space between your wire and teeth. Pull the floss threader through that space until it completely passes through, and your dental floss is now positioned between your wire and teeth.

Floss your teeth into the gumline and along the sides as usual. Pull out the floss. Repeat for the rest of your teeth until you’re done.

Dr. Niloo Naghdi earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Central Oklahoma and her Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the The University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry. She is dedicated to general dentistry and values the opportunity to interact with and build relationships with a diverse array of patients, improving their oral health and overall well-being.

Inspired by her sister, who is also a dentist, Dr. Naghdi discovered the profoundly rewarding nature of dentistry. Before entering dental school, she worked as a dental assistant in Oklahoma for eight years, gaining valuable experience and insight into the field.

Outside of work, Dr. Naghdi is passionate about working out and practicing yoga. On her days off, she enjoys spending time with her family.

Here’s your friendly reminder that sipping coffee slowly over the course of several hours can cause damage to tooth enamel and lead to temperature sensitivity and in some cases, cause staining on the surface of the tooth.

It’s best to drink coffee with breakfast and make sure that you brush your teeth afterwards.

Let’s beak down the pros and cons.

Braces:
• More noticeable, but can be personalized with colorful rubber bands
• Orthodontist is actively involved and will guide you through treatment for successful results
• Metal attachments may cause soreness and discomfort, especially after appointments
• Typically more affordable upfront, but treatment can be longer

Invisalign:
• Discreet and barely noticeable
• Fewer appointments
• You play a key role by wearing your trays to make treatment successful
• Soft edges create far less discomfort, but a little soreness is to be expected when you first begin treatment
• Higher upfront cost, but shorter treatment time can reduce overall expenses

Here’s a tip from your orthodontist! For our patient’s with braces we recommend eating softer foods because they are less likely to cause any discomfort or damage to wires and brackets.

When you first get your braces, your orthodontist will suggest you enjoy a lot of ice cream, smoothies, and soup.

After you get used to chewing with your braces, you can enjoy lots of soft foods like yogurt, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, soup, bread, and cheese.
