Travel tips from PHF Part 1: Let's talk pricing....

Who determines the price of your airfare? Although airlines do pay fees to the airport, airlines set their own pricing.

How does dynamic pricing for plane tickets work?

With an understanding of how dynamic pricing for plane tickets works, one can be sure to buy the right tickets at the right times to avoid inflated prices. Dynamic pricing is dependent on the current demand for a flight, how many protected and unprotected seats are left, the type of flight, and when you are booking.

A few tips to purchasing airfare:

1. The best days to fly for the cheapest domestic and international fares are midweek.
2. 3. Aim to book domestic flights one to two months ahead of time.
For international flights, plan on booking three to five months ahead of the trip.

Other factors to consider when choosing airfare:

Transit and Layover Time
When booking a flight, the total transit time is one of the first things you should notice. In the case of multiple stops, a shorter transit time is obviously more appealing. The less time we spend traveling, the more time we have at our destination.

On the flip side, watch out for transit times that are too short. Sometimes you can make a 40-minute layover work, but if the plane is late or there's inclement weather, you may be causing trouble for yourself. Domestically, a layover of 1 to 1.5 hours to be ideal. If your layover is international, or you’re flying into the U.S. from another country, add an extra hour for immigration, customs, and to re-check your baggage if necessary.

CITY MANAGER NAMES NEW FIRE CHIEF

Wesley A. Rogers has 20+ years of experience in all aspects of Fire and EMS
(Newport News, VA) – City Manager Alan K. Archer has announced his selection of Wesley A. Rogers for the position of Newport News Fire Chief. Rogers currently serves as the Interim Fire Chief for the city. In his new role, he will be responsible for an annual operating budget of more than $40 million, 11 stations, and a staff of 410.

“Wesley has a wealth of experience in fire and emergency medical services as well as emergency management and will be a tremendous asset to our city and our citizens,” Archer said. “We are delighted to have him lead the extraordinary men and women of our nationally and internationally recognized Fire Department.”

Rogers began his career in 2004 as a fire fighter recruit with the city and has served in various increasingly responsible capacities in Operations, Special Operations, Support Services, Professional Development and the Training Division. His career also includes roles as a technical instructor for the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, Hampton Roads Criminal Justice Training Academy, and the Newport News Police Department Academy.

"As the Interim Fire Chief, I am honored to accept the position of Fire Chief and continue to lead this department with dedication and integrity,” Rogers said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to serve alongside our brave fire fighters and committed staff. The greatest asset of any organization is the people, and I will work hard every day to ensure they have the tools, skills, and knowledge they need to protect our citizens and visitors. Together, we will continue to uphold the highest standards of service to our community.”

Rogers holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, a Master’s Degree in Public Administration, and is certified as an Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic with the Virginia Department of Health’s Office of Emergency Medical Services. He has also completed the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer Program and is credentialed as a Chief Fire Officer through the Center for Public Safety Excellence and the Center for Professional Credentialing.

Rogers begins his new duties effective immediately.
