November's modern birthstone is Citrine. It is a variety of quartz, is a 7 on the Mohs scale, and varies from pale yellow to a darker orange. The world’s largest faceted citrine, found in Brazil, weighed in at 20,200 carats.

A phantom apparition. Did you know that cloud formations in diamonds are actually phantoms mimicking the growth of their hosts? This hydrogen cloud inclusion is unusual in shape, resembling a Venetian party mask. It was seen in a brownish green type Ia diamond submitted to GIA for analysis. This photomicrograph shows the inclusion illuminated from the side with a fiber-optic light.
