Paying Peace Forward with Atomic Learning - Blog 06/08/2024

Today the world remembers the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki which took place 79 years ago and resulted in the formal surrender of Japan and the end of World War II. When Ariel Warshaw remembered this pivotal moment in history, she also realized that her viewpoint lacked global perspective, as well as the peace that was catalyzed post-mortem. So she designed a Fund for Teachers fellowship and changed her viewpoint this summer.

FFT Fellow Luz Brito a Global History and English as a New Language teacher in the Bronx of students who have been in the United States for four years or less. Therefore, she chooses to teach the Holocaust through the lens of forced immigration.

"I teach my immigrant students about the refugee crisis during the Holocaust. This is one of the main ways my students are able to empathize with victims of the Holocaust as they make connections to their own challenges and hardships to immigrate to the United States, including family separation. Though I make
it clear that the situations are totally different and we should not compare pain and suffering, my students find many connections in the stories that show the hardships many children and their families faced in order to find refuge in European countries that were not occupied by the N***s, or abroad."

Luz used a $5,000 Fund for Teachers grant to participate in the Centropa Summer Academy 2024 in Berlin, where she met two previous FFT Fellows: Marina Outwater and (second picture). Follow Luz' learning on Facebook at Fund for Teachers Fellowship Experience.

FFT Fellows making headlines in their hometown of Chicago! Sandra Burgess and Marymarget Coakley and will use an Innovation Circle grant to research the growth of the slave trade through civil rights resistance in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee to create a research project that requires students to focus on mapping how slavery contributed to the economy of the US, which caused those who benefited to oppose its demise.

"As we read narratives and testimonies, as we look closely at maps, students often do not understand the larger and long lasting impact of slavery, specifically the economic impact that is still felt today," said Sandra. "I hope to bridge the early days of the slave trade, to the rise and apex of slave trading in New Orleans and Montgomery, to today using Jason Reynolds and Ibram X Kendi's "Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You," The 1619 Project, and Lorraine Hansberry's "A Raisin in the Sun," as well as numerous primary sources from the Atlantic Slave Trade, through abolition, and mid-20th c resistance."

By using authentic materials, the intention is to make meaningful connections and bridge the gap between diverse backgrounds, transforming the classroom into a space where every student's story truly matters."

M.C. Escher's art was rooted in mathematics. And Laura Irace's fellowship is rooted in Escher. She is using a $5,000 Fund for Teachers grant to learn about the processes and places that influenced Escher's art in the Netherlands and across Spain’s Iberian Peninsula to share and engage students in mathematics in new ways.

"Many students don’t identify as 'math students,' and write off the subject as something that they are either uninterested in or unable to succeed in, or both. With this fellowship, I’m developing my knowledge and understanding of the works of M.C. Escher–specifically, his work with tessellation–to engage students and stakeholders in a non-traditional way," said Laura. "Additionally, this fellowship is designed to reach out to other students, staff, and families by showcasing student work on a large scale on a wall in our relatively austere building. Ultimately, these activities are meant to engage students, particularly ones who have difficulty seeing themselves as mathematicians, in order to get them in school more regularly, and therefore, hopefully, increase achievement on standardized tests."
