23/10/2018

On October 9th I received the 2018 Jim McGregor Government Service Award. I was selected by the Retail Association of Maine Board of Directors.

The Retail Association of Maine named this award after its retired director of government affairs, Mr. Jim McGregor, in 2010. Jim’s decades of hard work in the public policy arena paved the way for setting the standard for an award that recognizes an individual who goes above and beyond in support of Maine’s retail community.

I have always advocated for small businesses and retailers. As a businessman, I am able to share my real-life experience to formulate sound public policy. I worked with the Retail Association of Maine and other interest groups to clarify that retailers can properly advertise a cash and credit price to consumers. Without this, a number of retailers and gas stations were in danger of running afoul of the Maine law that prohibited this practice.

I am proud of my contribution to help Maine's businesses and I am confident the work will continue in the next legislature.

Here are some helpful tips from the Governor's Energy Office:

As with any cold snap, a home will burn more fuel than during a normal winter, so it's critical for homeowners to plan accordingly. When the temperature averages 0 degrees in a day, a typical home that heats with oil will burn about 10 gallons, and a typical home that heats with propane will burn 15 gallons. When the temperature averages 30 degrees, a typical home will burn 5 gallons of heating oil, or about 7 gallons of propane. The usage is cut in half.

A quarter tank of oil has about 40 useful gallons of oil in it, assuming a homeowner has the most typical size tank, a 275 gallon one. That’s about 4 days of heat in a normal house at zero degrees, and about a week’s worth of heat if the temperature averages 30 degrees.

Propane tank sizes vary, the gauges typically read in percentages. The homeowner can do the math, figure out how many gallons they have, and determine the number of days supply

If a homeowner runs out of fuel, they should call the state's hotline for heating emergencies by dialing 211. They may be able to line up an alternate fuel supplier.

From the State House: Congress must delay health insurance tax 08/11/2017

As a small business owner, in addition to serving in the Maine State Senate, I understand the challenge these companies face. I know what it’s like coping with market ups and downs while trying to pay good wages and provide high-quality benefits for employees. It’s a constant struggle. More taxes won’t help, especially when added on top of already out-of-control health insurance premiums.

From the State House: Congress must delay health insurance tax Instituting an extra cost now will hurt small businesses and consumers, a state senator from Skowhegan says.

Message from IF&W:

Due to extremely widespread power outages, some hunters are having difficulty registering their harvested deer. Hunters are encouraged to call ahead to registration stations to see if they are open.

We remind hunters to continue to hunt safely, and If you harvest a deer and are unable to find an open deer registration station, you can contact a Maine Game Warden through Maine State Police dispatch centers.

The department would like to remind hunters that a recently revised law, PUBLIC LAW 2017 CHAPTER 226, allows a person to keep an unregistered animal harvested by that person if they notify a game warden within 18 hours and provide the location of the animal and the circumstances preventing the person from registering the animal.

To reach a Game Warden 24-hours a day, please contact the Maine State Police dispatch center nearest you:
