September is Life Insurance Awareness Month:
Ohioans Urged to Evaluate Life Insurance During Financial Planning
COLUMBUS – A recent national study by Life Happens found that half of the population is financially unprepared in the event that a family’s primary wage earner was to pass away. The study revealed that 10 percent of people would experience financial strain in one week and 44 percent of people within six months.
Ohio governor Mike DeWine has designated September as Life Insurance Awareness Month and Ohio Department of Insurance director Judith L. French encourages Ohioans to examine the financial impact of losing a primary wage earner and to evaluate life insurance.
“Life insurance can play an important role in a family’s financial plan and financial security but it needs to be carefully evaluated with the assistance of an insurance agent,” French said. “Educational life insurance information is available from the Ohio Department of Insurance and our representatives are available to answer any questions.”
Director French provided these life insurance insights:
How does life insurance provide financial security?
Life insurance policy proceeds can help temporarily replace a primary wage earner’s income, fund ongoing expenses, and pay other debts left behind.
What is an appropriate amount of life insurance?
The amount of life insurance a person should purchase depends on unique factors such as their family situation and financial standing, including how much a person can afford to pay for it. An insurance agent can help determine a suitable amount.
Are there different types of life insurance products?
Life insurance falls into two product classes: term and cash value. Term insurance provides lower-cost coverage for a specific time, such as 5, 10, and 20 years. Cash value insurance -- whole, universal, and variable -- often spans a lifetime and includes savings and investment features.
Products with different benefits are available for different types of wage earners and some policies may allow for flexible premium contribution amounts. In addition, some premium amounts may increase after a certain amount of time that the coverage is active.
How often should I review my life insurance coverage?
Circumstances associated with marriage, children, loans, employment, and retirement are reasons to increase or decrease benefits, adjust policy features, and review the beneficiaries of the policy. Remember to review the policy’s annual statement to verify the policy is performing as expected and address any concerns with an insurance agent.
Where can I get life insurance information and assistance?
Educational life insurance information is available from the Ohio Department of Insurance at www.insurance.ohio.gov and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners at www.naic.org. Call 800-686-1526 and email [email protected] to reach department representatives with your life insurance questions and/or concerns.
NAIC - Supporting Insurance, Regulators, & Public Interest The National Association of Insurance Commissioners serves to protect public interest, promote competitive markets, and improve state regulation of insurance.

Hospital Indemnity
Even if you have medical insurance, certain costs of a hospital stay are often not covered. But Hospital Indemnity insurance can come in clutch to fill in coverage gaps for things like ambulance rides, emergency room visits, and observational monitoring.
1. Hospital Indemnity provides asset protection.
“The majority of Americans do not have sufficient funds lying around to cover an expensive unexpected hospital stay,” Rayburn says. On average, this runs $30,000 for three days.
“Medico’s Hospital Indemnity Insurance will help cover much of the out-of-pocket costs not covered by traditional insurance plans. It also can ensure that the savings they do have will not have to be used or depleted to cover an unexpected hospital stay,” Rayburn adds.
2. It pairs well with Medicare Supplement.
Since Hospital Indemnity insurance is full of riders, it’s possible to customize coverage based on your individual financial needs, family history, medical history, and overall risk profile.
3. It also teams up nicely with other high deductible plans.
Most health insurance options — including Affordable Care Act plans, Medicare Advantage, and other high deductible plans — were not designed to cover all medical expenses, especially those associated with a hospital stay. Medico’s Hospital Indemnity plan pays the policyholder a dollar amounts they’ve chosen to fill in those gaps, Rayburn says.
4. Hospital Indemnity is ideal to most adults 18 or older.
Any age of client is ideal to at least mention Hospital Indemnity insurance, Rayburn says; however, Medico’s Hospital Indemnity insurance is issued from age 18 to 85.
“The premiums are level beginning at issue date, which is great news for those whose policy is put in place at younger ages,” Rayburn says.
5. It keeps life insurance premiums steady.---.
“People will pay their necessary bills before they will pay extras, such as cell phone bills, gym memberships, or life insurance premiums,” Rayburn says. “Medico’s Hospital Indemnity plan will provide the extra money to cover the costs of the hospital charges not covered by health care, so the policyholder will not be feeling the financial stress of choosing to pay for necessities versus other expenditures.”
6. Lump Sum Cancer benefit riders can be incredibly helpful in the event of a cancer diagnosis.
More than 1 in 3 (36%) of Americans will receive a cancer diagnosis at some point in their lives, reports the National Cancer Institute. I can help you fill gaps with Hospital Indemnity riders to cover indirect costs related to most cancer-related treatments, like experimental trials, medicine, or even job loss.
7. Additional riders can help with other long-term treatments and monitoring needs.
Beyond the cancer rider, Medico offers six more riders that are designed to cover other potentially costly things, like ambulance rides, speech/occupational/physical therapy, outpatient surgery, and skilled nursing care needs after a hospital stay.
“Many times, seniors, even those who are covered by a Medicare Supplement plan, have an opening for out-of-pocket costs. The base plan can be driven down since a Medicare Supplement will cover the hospital costs, and riders can be added for a fraction of the cost of stand-alone plans that are in the market,” Rayburn says.
8. Travel benefits can be used for the policyholder and another legal adult.
The transportation and lodging benefit can assist in charges, like gas, for drives to appointments or even the hotel stay of another legal adult accompanying the policyholder while they are receiving in-hospital or outpatient care.
Thanks,
Gregory Edwards

4 Things That Happen If You Avoid the Dentist
Many people believe good oral care means they only need to brush their teeth once or twice each day, and floss once daily. While these are important actions, it’s also necessary to schedule regular dental appointments for a checkup and professional teeth cleaning.
Consider four things that happen if you don’t:
Tooth decay – Daily tooth brushing and flossing help keep plaque under control. Plaque is created by food particles that join with bacteria to form a substance that adheres to teeth. If not removed, plaque can break down tooth enamel and cause decay. During regular dental checkups, dental professionals clean and remove plaque. Skipping these appointments allows bacteria to flourish and attack your teeth and gums, and create decay that may require extensive restorations, such as a root canal or crown, and also cause bad breath.
Gum disease – Untreated tooth decay can lead to gum or periodontal disease. The gums are designed to provide a tight cover around your teeth and roots. Plaque bacteria can attack the gums, causing swelling and bleeding, allowing bacteria to settle underneath. If not treated properly, this condition, called gingivitis, can lead to periodontal disease.
Health problems – During a checkup, dental professionals also may detect signs of serious medical problems. Catching these problems early may help you avoid expensive medical bills. If you don’t regularly see the dentist, health problems, such as hypertension, diabetes, oral cancers, kidney failure and heart disease may not be discovered until they’re in a more advanced stage. Often it’s because people see their dentist more often than their regular medical doctor.
Stains – Drinking coffee, tea and wine, or smoking ci******es can stain teeth and create an unattractive smile. Professional teeth cleanings help remove stains. However, dark discolorations may require cosmetic dentistry procedures to remove stains and whiten teeth.

Gregory Edwards
