Foto Dono

I have been a multi-award-winning photo artist, photographer, and teacher for over 25 years. Why Foto Dono? (Sigh) It’s one of those questions I get asked a lot.

In short it began as a nick name and stuck. It has meant many things to me over the years - the artists formerly know as Donovan, sometime wedding & portrait photographer and the guy who just makes weird sh....err... stuff. However, lately it’s come to mean something else. My boy is the one who drives me these days. I want to leave behind a body of work that he’ll be proud of. Hopefully not some s

Some people, and you know who you are, have been asking if I'll make a calendar for next year. (sigh) I was going to make a beefcake calendar with photos of me, but then I sobered up.😜 So, it will be of BW Landscape Photos I've shot. It's not as exciting, I grant you, but it probably won't get me in trouble.

The plan is to go out and shoot some more beach photos in August and September before I put the calendar up for world dominance. Hopefully, I can pick up some beach portraits along the way. However, with the way the weather has been... (sigh)

Let me know in the comments below if you're interested in a Foto Dono calendar.

Stripped to the Zen: There were brief moments when the sun came out between the rain storms.

Edits: I pushed the contrast a lot on this photo and removed a pesky branch on the left. There is more on the bottom that’s cropped out because of Instagram aspect ratios, but I can live with it.

It rained nearly every day on my road trip with my son. Still, with all the rain, it kept the temperature and bugs at bay. We did manage a few walks along some small trails in the Everglades. In the cities, you never realize how flat Florida is with an infinite grass horizon.

Edits: I’ve been loving the Black and White photography lately. It always seems more appropriate to landscapes. The edits here mainly deal with contrast and values.

I finally got my Camper Van back—without the fridge. (Sigh.) But I brought my son on the Van’s maiden voyage to the Florida Everglades. It was a cozy trip, and it rained a lot! Hangin’ with my son was a fantastic way to start my trips. Now I need another destination.

Edits: I am still on a BW kick with my photography. I had fun trying out a new lens I bought for the trip, the Panasonic Lumix S PRO 70-200mm f/2.8 O.I.S. Lens. I’m calling him Larry. Besides some tweaking with contrast and values, I did nothing else in the post. However, this bird flew in and ruined the shot. Stupid naytcher... 😜

So far, requests for how-to on edits have been few. If you’ve seen a post I made or want to know more about how I edited it, let me know in the comments. Thank you to everyone for their birthday wishes yesterday. It was very much appreciated.

When I was 15, my parents gave me my first camera. Now that I'm 55, I remember those days, and the surviving photos are very personal. I really didn't want to make a shirt composed of images that were really personal moments and very private. So why not a shirt for the camera? That was the tool that helped me make those images. It helped me become the photographer I am today. I've ordered one for myself... And if any of you photo nerds want one, you can request one, too. Just DM me, and I'll send you the code for a bit off the price.

Looking for Zen, I became lost among the cypress along the Suwannee River.

Edits: The photo is one of my last taken on my Black and White Foto Safari trip a few weeks ago. Like the rest in the series, it was shot with Bob and Burt: my Panasonic Lumix S5II camera and the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art lens. This is a single shot, edited for highlights and shadows. I modified it for the Instagram 4:5 ratio.

I wandered on a beaten path near Manatee Spring State Park in Cheifland, FL, looking for some Zen among the Cypress trees. I know the mosquitos like the taste of my Zen. 😉

Edits: Once more, I was shooting with Burt, my Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art lens, and again, I ended up shooting and stitching multiple images together. The challenge of shooting with a 50mm isn’t that you should only accept what it gives; it’s what it can help you create. You have to use the tools at hand to create the vision in your head.

I am trying to remember where I stumbled upon this guy. It was along some boardwalk in Florida State Park. The date and time suggest Dudley Farm Historic State Park, but that’s still being determined.

Edits: I was shooting with Burt, my Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art lens, and it’s not designed for macro. This little fellow was about an inch, maybe a little longer. The minimum focus distance for the lens is about 1.5ft. Think of it as a dime on a sheet of 8.5 x11 paper. So yeah, I cropped the crap out of it and ran it through Topaz AI Gigapixel. The details came through, considering. Sometimes, I take photos of technically or gear-challenged stuff and see what I can make of them.

This is another photograph taken during my visit to Dudley Farm Historic State Park. It is from the blacksmith workshop; although no one was using it during my visit, I can see it has been used recently. I love little detail shots like this.

Edits: Other than some editing for shadows and highlights, the only other editing I did was cropping.

The photo is the front of the farmhouse at the Dudley Farm Historic State Park. A fantastic place to visit and explore. I just love photographing doors and windows.

Edits: I shot the front of the farmhouse with my 50mm lens. So I ended up shooting multiple photos and stitching then together. Instagram’s aspect ratio crops a little bit but not too much.

BW Edit alla Foto Dono 08/07/2024

Now for something completely different... Some of you said you were interested in how I did the edits. I was waiting to see if a photo got enough likes to use that as the edit. However, they're all about evenish. Technically, the one with Lou has the mostish. So, Even though none of the photos got 30 likes, I'm going to bow to peer pressure of a few 😜.

I hope you enjoy it and find it informative. Be sure to like and subscribe if you want to see more. Also, if you see a particular photo edited, give it some extra love, like a comment or share. Something that lets me know which one to tackle next.

RV Day 51 - Yeah not much has changed 07/07/2024

So this is my Day 51 RV Update. Yep... 51 days since I purchased the RV, and it's been at Camping World for 42 Days. (sigh)

As I mentioned in the video, I'm eagerly looking forward to picking up the RV this weekend and preparing it for our exciting trip with my son on the 20th.

I'm considering doing a video tour of the RV next weekend or when my son is down for his visit.

If you're enjoying these updates, I'd love it if you could hit the subscribe button on YouTube. Your support means a lot. Cheers.

I photographed one of the farmhouse windows during my visit to Dudley Farm Historic State Park. I shot everything with Burt, my Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art lens, in BW. It was a fun challenge that kept me on my toes, and I love photographing windows. 😉

Edits: Instagram has a 4:5 ratio, and this image was shot in a 2:3. The Instagram ratio wasn’t working, so I shrank the image into their format and stuck a frame around it. I also did a little editing with the contrast to improve shadows and highlights.

Hopefully not some stuff shoved in a closet or just dumped off in a rubbish bin. I want him to see me working on my goals and dreams. How I work to achieve them and then set new goals for myself. I hope that he sees his crazy old man was, in the end, chasing his dreams of making art. I hope to show him my failures and my successes in my pursuit. I hope to show him by example. In the end I just hope for him. So, now 25 years later after it all began, the answer to “Why Foto Dono?” It’s for him.

About Dono - Donovan Evans, also known as Foto Dono, is an award-winning photo-artist. Currently obsessed with the Milky Way. When not making things he is the Education Director at Johnson PhotoImaging where he teaches photography. He has been making and taking pictures since he was 15 and teaching photography for over 20 years.

Expertise - My work focuses on capturing a moment in time, whether it's portraiture, landscape, nature, lifestyle imagery, or basking in the light of the Milky Way. Always experimenting with new techniques, I'm equally comfortable with analog and digital technologies and use both according to the needs of the project.
