Students aboard the Northern Star Floating Classroom were engaged in collecting samples of lake water in Lake Memphremagog to measure water quality. In the onboard lab, they used digital microscopes to identify phytoplankton, (plants) and zooplankton, (animals). They also made use of Secchi Disks to record the clarity of water in the lake. The Secchi disk is a tool used to measure water clarity, or transparency, by lowering it into a body of water until it disappears from view. The depth at which the disk disappears is called the Secchi disk depth.
This portion of the Floating classroom will be combined with a river studies trip and in class learning to help students understand their place in the watershed and how to keep our waters healthy.
Students in grades 4-8 will experience The Floating Classroom which is a hands-on experiential environmental education program on board the ship, the Northern Star. Students will also focus on watershed science, data collection, and applied science techniques.
In October, Students in grades K-3 will work with Jon Galimor participating in a songwriting workshop. Every participant will become a songwriter! This experience is designed to ignite the creativity within. It helps students discover themselves, their uniqueness, and their poetic and musical talents. Students will learn to appreciate, and collaborate with their fellow composers. The ability to create something beautiful in a group is a skill they will always carry with them.
