Invitation to 2023 Sustainability Symposium

Georgia College & State University's Office of Sustainability & Sustainability Council are pleased to announce the

2023 Sustainability Symposium
& Geospatial Public Health Forum:

Examining Environmental Justice by Exposing Waste Issues in our Community and Exploring Our Role in Remediation

Our hope is that this symposium will inspire revolutionary conversations to transform how our communities approach waste treatment and environmental health. We intend to shed light on environmental justice problems that Baldwin and surrounding counties are facing, and encourage conversation and collaboration to resolve these issues.

The symposium is to take place on April 20th, 2023, starting at 5:30pm in the Arts and Sciences Auditorium. The event will include light refreshments and breakout groups based on interest following panelist speaker addresses. Speakers at the symposium will represent Georgia College’s Aquatic Sciences Center, Rural Studies Institute, and Center for Health and Social Issues, as well as a wide variety of representation from many of Georgia College’s academic departments.

The GCSU Office of Sustainability and Sustainability Council have been working to make our community more sustainable for the last fifteen years. We feature a unique composting program that diverts food waste from the campus dining hall away from landfills, we have made recycling available campus wide, and promote education programming such as the West Campus Garden. The annual symposium gives us a platform to celebrate sustainability and broaden our impact in the community.

Ever wondered more about composting at Georgia College? Our compost team, Molly, Anna and Ama, have been working super hard this semester on our awesome compost site. So far this year, we have been able to divert over 10,000 lbs of food waste from landfills and repurposed them into high quality compost that is used as a fertilizer in our campus garden. Most of our compost comes from food waste collected at the Max! You can learn more about our composting program by visiting https://www.gcsu.edu/green/what-we-do

4 of our interns, Cooper, Gael, Molly, and Kara, had so much fun attending the Georgia Recycling Coalition annual conference in St. Simon’s, Ga. this week. They enjoyed this opportunity to network with some of the recycling industry’s front runners and learned so much about how Georgia companies and organizations are making their operations more sustainable. Intern Spotlight!
Last week, our compost assistant Anna Lippy represented The GC Office of Sustainability at the Georgia Environmental Conference at Jekyll Island. She attended sessions on various environmental topics, from the emergence of micro-plastics to environmental justice. This was a great networking opportunity, and Anna made a lot of great connections that could lead to a career after graduation! Go Anna!
