NVA Hero, Dr. Eric Lui, saved a homeless Husky mix that was found trapped in a storm drain.

After being struck by a car, the terrified and injured stray sought refuge in a storm drain. A local sheriff's deputy rushed to the scene and crawled 25 feet into the culvert to rescue her. He brought her to Sumner Veterinary Hospital where Dr. Lui determined she needed immediate, life-saving surgery.

A local non-profit organization dedicated to supporting animals in need quickly stepped in to fund the surgery. Dr. Lui performed a diaphragmatic hernia repair and said the pup is lucky to be alive due to the severity of her injury.

The local animal control fittingly named her Piper, and she spent the next five days at Sumner before being healthy enough to continue her recovery at a loving foster home.

Every month we’ll celebrate the heroes in our General Practice community, like Dr. Lui, who dedicate themselves to making a difference - one animal at a time. 💙

This October, Dr. Ilan Cohen joined volunteers to care for dozens of displaced animals after the October 7 attack.

As a veterinarian for 27 years and currently the Managing Veterinarian at NVA’s St. George Hunt Veterinary Hospital in Pennsylvania, Dr. Cohen provided essential care to animals that had been evacuated, abandoned, or lost due to the ongoing conflict and distributed crucial veterinary supplies.

Reflecting on his experience, Dr. Cohen shared, "Being able to help in the small way that I did was truly meaningful."

Today, on International Day of Veterinary Medicine, let’s celebrate the compassion, dedication, and selflessness of heroes like Dr. Cohen, who go above and beyond for animals and the people who love them.

As we continue celebrating Practice Manager Appreciation Week, we want to highlight Molly Lautzenheiser, whose dedication goes beyond her practice. 💚

Molly not only runs NVA’s Avon Lake Animal Clinic, an 18-doctor practice in Ohio, but she was also recently appointed to the Veterinary Hospital Managers Association (VHMA) Board of Directors.

“I love helping others grow and achieve their goals, focusing on their path to a happy and fulfilling career in veterinary medicine,” she said. “I’m also thrilled to be able to give back to the VHMA community, as they have given so much to me in terms of support, learning opportunities, networking, and personal growth.”

To all of our NVA Practice Managers- Thank you for your leadership, expertise, and passion. You make a lasting impact on our teams and our entire NVA community.

It's Practice Manager Appreciation Week! All across the NVA community, we're celebrating our incredible leaders who are the glue that holds our teams and hospitals together. 💚

Marian Rowland, CVPM, is just one example of the incredible Practice Managers at NVA. She’s been with NVA’s Park West Veterinary Associates (PWVA) in South Carolina for 15 years and currently leads more than 40 people.

“Marian has helped grow PWVA from a 2-doctor practice to a 7-doctor practice,” said her team. “While her background is in business management, her true gift and passion is helping people. Whether it's serving our clients, jumping in to help whichever department needs assistance at any given time, she continues to amaze us with her ability to do it all!”

To all NVA Practice Managers- Thank you for your leadership, expertise, and passion. You make a lasting impact on our teams and our entire NVA community.

At NVA, we’re proud to be home to many United States veterans. Whether they’re doctors or vet techs who save lives, hospital managers who lead our teams, or military working dogs in our care, we’re grateful to them – and their families – for sacrificing so much for our country. 🇺🇸

In every corner of our community, we’re lucky to have veterans who dedicate their unique talents to improving the lives of animals and the people who love them. On Veterans Day and all year long, we honor them all. Here are just a few.

❤️ Misty Wilson, Hospital Manager at Woodlake Animal Hospital in Oklahoma, served in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps from 2004 to 2014. Reflecting on her time in the Army, Misty shares how it shaped her ability to navigate difficult decisions and lead with compassion. "I want others to feel the warmth you feel in your heart when you treat not only the animal but also the people who love them."

💙 Dr. Dean Burns with Westridge Animal Hospital in Texas was responsible for the veterinary care of 40 to 60 Military Working Dogs (MWD) while in the U.S. Army. He now works with veterans, service dogs, and MWDs who inspire him daily with their selflessness and acts of heroism. “I have made it my mission to see to it that service animals of all kinds are treated with the respect and care they deserve.”

🤍 Summer Schultz, Veterinary Technician at Woodlake Animal Hospital in Oklahoma, followed in her Aunt's footsteps and joined the Air National Guard in 2018. Summer said her experience in the Air Force equipped her with valuable skills in leadership and multitasking. “Two of the Air Force’s core values are service before self and excellence in all we do. I try to implement these values every day with every animal I meet.”

🇺🇸 Kelsi Frump, Veterinary Technician at Seven Hills Pet Clinic in Ohio, is currently in the Army National Guard. Her Hospital Manager, Kerri Adkins, says her commitment extends beyond her clinic and commends her dedication and adaptability. "She was deployed while in her clinical year of tech school and still managed to get her work done and pass her boards," said Kerri. "She leads by example and knows things change for the better when you put your best into a situation."

These individuals are just a few of those in our community whose leadership and compassion define who we are. Their dedication and unique talents make our country safer and our NVA community better.

To everyone who served and sacrificed, thank you.

Cary Veterinary Hospital saves abandoned puppy with parvovirus (and finds him a home with Lead Vet Tech Erin Short). 💙

Mango, a 4-month-old Labrador Retriever, arrived at Cary Veterinary Hospital with a fever of 104.8 and could not swallow or lift his head. Under Erin’s watch, Mango began to receive 24/7 care and, thankfully, made a full recovery. Unfortunately, the owner felt they could no longer care for Mango and surrendered the puppy. But the bond Erin formed with Mango was too strong, so she adopted him. Today, Mango enjoys running in the backyard with his new siblings.

“Experiences like this help remind us why we are here and important,” said Erin.

Every day, compassionate individuals within our General Practice community dedicate themselves to improving the lives of animals and the people who love them. And Vet Tech Erin is no different. She is committed to delivering the highest level of care to animals in her community.

NVA's Companion Animal Hospital in Pennsylvania recently encountered an unexpected and out-of-place visitor – a flamingo.🦩

Hurricane Idalia disrupted the normal migration pattern of these tropical birds, leading them far from their usual warm habitats. However the flamingo's vacation took an unfortunate turn when it was attacked by a snapping turtle, resulting in serious leg injuries. Dr. Lynn Libby performed a successful soft tissue surgery on the injured bird, marking a crucial step toward its recovery.

This heartwarming encounter reinforced the team’s sense of purpose. "These experiences remind us why we do this," said Dr. Libby. 🐾❤️

At NVA’s Park West Veterinary Associates in Mount Pleasant, SC, the team rallied together to support Nala, a long-standing patient diagnosed with osteosarcoma. Hayden B., a Veterinary Technician on the team and Nala's owner, feared the worst after Nala had to lose her leg. However, Dr. Elise Mauer and Dr. Carl Schmidt led the charge and were confident they could give her the best quality of life with the right treatments.

Last month, the team was ecstatic to have Nala graduate from chemotherapy and held a pirate-themed party to celebrate how they made Nala’s cancer walk the plank. 🏴‍☠️
