Some good news within our industry. I think every little bit helps at this point for most homeowners!
Florida insurance companies approved for rate decrease Despite an active hurricane season being predicted, the state says eight insurance companies have asked to decrease their rates this year.
Have you tried buying or selling a home during hurricane season and was told you had to wait for the insurance because the carriers shut down due to storm approaching?
This is known as The Storm In A Box.
There is an invisible box around Florida that is 16,000 square miles. When a named tropical storm or hurricane enters the box, insurance companies will stop writing new business.
It's important to keep this in mind if you are planning to buy or sell during hurricane season!
Did you know there is a difference between homeowners insurance and flood insurance when it comes to hurricane damage?
The graphic provided does help to explain the difference, but basically:
- If the hurricane damages the roof, and water gets in that way, it would be under the homeowners insurance policy.
- If there is a rise in water (from the ground) due to the amount of rain caused by the hurricane, it would go under your flood insurance policy.
Many people, unfortunately, learned this the hard way during Hurricane Ian.
Make sure you are prepared this season! I'd be happy to help with a policy review or any quotes!

I hope everyone is handling all of this rain okay!
Here are some tips for handling any type of flood waters.
1. Never walk in flood waters: You don't know what's in the water. There could be strong currents, harmful debris, etc.
2. Never underestimate the swiftness of water. Water is unpredictable and is one of the most powerful elements of the earth.
3. Don't assume your vehicle is safe. High water can stall your motor. Depending on the force of the water, the vehicle can easily be swept away / moved.
4. Don't try to drive through a flood area. Again, your motor can stall. Also, you can't see what's in the water, so you are susceptible to hitting something or getting stuck.
5. Get to higher ground. Where possible, get to higher ground to protect yourself from any risk of danger.
Do you have a screened enclosure?
Did you know you can put coverage for this on most insurance policies?
