Message from Governor DeWine sent to School Leaders yesterday:
Message from Governor DeWine Re: COVID-19 surge among Ohio's children
Dear School Leaders,

Yesterday, I participated in a Zoom call with superintendents from our public school districts and clinical leadership from Ohio children’s hospitals to provide updated information about the increasingly serious situation with children and COVID-19. I am writing to share with you a link to that Zoom call.

Our children’s hospitals are our most trusted authorities when it comes the health care of our children. They have made a direct appeal to our schools, asking that all schools require masks temporarily for staff and students during this very dangerous surge of the coronavirus.

I would be very grateful if you would watch this Zoom call to hear directly from the medical experts at our children’s hospitals. I have also attached an open letter to all Ohioans from the Ohio Children’s Hospital Association and an infographic displaying information about the current spike of COVID-19 cases among Ohio’s kids.

Very respectfully yours,

Mike DeWine

Governor

I want to share the resolution passed by our Board of Education at our meeting this evening. But it doesn’t stop there - we will start taking action through our Superintendent to do as much as we can with the advice of our safety forces and our community to make our schools safe places for our children.

BOARD RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, on February 14th 2018, seventeen students and faculty lost their lives and 14 others were seriously wounded in a school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida.

WHEREAS, surviving students from this shooting have told us that we are adults and it is our responsibility to fix this problem.

WHEREAS, school shootings have become an epidemic in the United States of America.

WHEREAS, the children of our nation deserve to be able to attend school without fear of death, and their parents deserve to send them to school without the same fear.

WHEREAS, this has become uniquely an American problem that does not happen with this frequency in other countries.

WHEREAS, there have been many possible causes and solutions proposed to this problem.

WHEREAS, multiple studies have shown that the majority of Americans support reasonable regulations concerning the sale and distribution of weapons.

WHEREAS, we must all work together as a country to solve this problem and take action beyond just offering thoughts and prayers for those slain and wounded.

NOW THEREFORE

BE IT RESOLVED THAT on this 21st Day of February, 2018, that the undersigned Members of the Plain Local Board of Education have affixed their signatures below, imploring the President of the United States, the Governor of the State of Ohio, our National Congress, and the State Legislature of Ohio to enact legislation and provide funding to schools for the following:

1.Supporting the availability and funding of adequate healthcare for all Americans, including mental health and substance abuse treatment so that all individuals who are in need of help have sufficient access to these services, and the support of enhanced mental health services for children.

2.Providing funding and resources for additional school safety measures, including but not limited to additional School Resource Officers, and other security measures to prevent a shooter with a weapon from entering school premises, and to better ensure the safety of students and staff if an active shooter has entered a building.

3.Enacting or restoring reasonable laws regarding the sale, use, and licensing of weapons which may include but are not limited to the following:

•Requiring all gun buyers to pass a criminal background check before purchasing a weapon regardless of where or how the weapon is purchased, with adequate funding to maintain a national database for such verification

•Requiring the licensing of all fi****ms and their sellers with annual renewal

•Restoring legislation that bans the sale of military-style assault weapons, as well as high capacity magazines or clips

•Banning the sale or possession of devices that convert weapons to automatic firing capability such as “bump stocks” or that silence the report of weapons
