Accommodations are key to success in school. It’s not “cheating”, it’s sharing the same knowledge in a different way.

Educators, we have the opportunity to empower every student by recognizing and nurturing their individual learning styles. Max found his passion through visual storytelling when traditional methods didn't quite fit.

🍎 Educators, when have you stepped outside the conventional toolbox to support a student's unique learning path?

When parents uncover their child’s dyslexia, they always ask, “What do we do?”. My response is always the same…
Nurture their gifts, their interests, their talents - whatever they are good at. Dyslexia is a long road where their weaknesses will continually be brought to the forefront. As a parent, your job is to celebrate and encourage their strengths that will lead them amazing places in life!

As a teenager, Lola Anderson, a rower, wanted to be on the Olympic team. She pulled out her diary and wrote in pink highlighter, "My name is Lola Anderson, and I think it would be my biggest dream in life to go to the Olympics in rowing and, if possible, win a gold for GB." (BBC’s Radio 4’s Today)

Her father—who was a rower himself—found the note and gave it to her seven years later/two months before his death after he had been diagnosed with terminal cancer, “as a reminder and a memento that even when you don't back yourself, your parents and loved ones always do."

Today she won gold. She credits her dad.

A dyslexic mind thinks differently…

Insight into the dyslexic mind...

Hunter Armstrong swam an amazing third leg of the Men’s 4x100m Olympic Freestyle Relay – and he and his USA teammates won gold! Just prior to the start of the race, after sharing that Hunter was added to the relay team last minute, the announcer added that Hunter was a disorganized person. I thought that comment seemed very odd – and disrespectful of someone who was just about to represent our country on one of the largest world stages. I mentioned out loud that I thought the comment seemed strange and out of place. My son, a talented budding sportswriter who always has a pulse on anything and everything sports, was in the room and immediately cleared things up by sharing that Hunter had actually been voted “Most Likely to Miss the Bus” by his Olympic teammates. It was probably an endearing inside joke between teammates that somehow made its way to Twitter. As my son and I were talking about it further, we agreed how important it is that people always REALLY look at the talents of ALL kids. Because… What if coaches would have only seen Hunter’s disorganization and missed his entire talent for swimming because they were only fixated on his organizational capacity? His whole talent for swimming might have been missed! My son said that I should share a post about the importance of really seeing kids for ALL that they are and not just getting frustrated by something they may be challenged by. With the new school year upon us, it really feels like the perfect time for us all to have that thought in our hearts and minds. Cheers to Hunter and the USA Men’s Freestyle Relay Team! And cheers to the awesome talents of ALL kids – and everyone! May we always take time to really get to know each other and see and celebrate each other’s extraordinary talents far beyond what may only appear at the surface. 💙💛🖤💚❤️ Paula
