🚨 Attention Lakeport Drivers: School Bus Safety Reminder! 🚨

We are seeing a concerning increase in drivers violating California Vehicle Code Section 22454 (CVC), which requires all vehicles to STOP when a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended. Let's keep our students safe by following the law and understanding why it's so important.

💡 Why Do School Buses Have Flashing Lights and Stop Arms?
• Safety First: The lights and stop arm are there to protect children getting on and off the bus.
• Extended Time for Safety: The lights may remain flashing longer to ensure every child has crossed the street safely or to allow students to board or exit the bus without rushing, become seated and fasten their seatbelts.

🚨 What Happens If You Violate Section 22454 CVC?
- Fines of $695.00 or more!
- A point on your Driver's License which may increase insurance costs
- Most importantly, you put a child’s life at risk

⚠️ Remember: When the red lights are flashing, you MUST stop in both directions unless you're on the opposite side of a divided roadway (The City of Lakeport does not have any such divided roadways).
Let’s work together to protect our community’s children and ensure everyone makes it home safe.
