How often should you sharpen you dental hygiene instruments?

"Though a bit older, one study has shown that after 15 strokes an instrument begins to dull/show wear with minor beveling. After 45 strokes, bevels of the cutting edge became even larger. Using this figure, you may need to sharpen at least once per week or so."

Why Sharpen Dental Instruments?
Dental instruments are made of metal, and even the highest quality, most durable metal gradually loses its edge as it's used. That’s just physics. Restoring this edge is important because:

â—Ź Properly sharpened edges require less effort on the part of the hygienist, reducing musculoskeletal impact.

â—Ź Dull instruments can leave behind burnished calculus, a harmful ultra-smooth buildup that is both difficult to detect and remove.

â—Ź Sharp instruments are more efficient and effective, resulting in more efficient delivery of care, more time for additional services, more comfortable patients, and superior clinical outcomes.

Let us help you keep your clinical day efficient and effective!

Founder Spotlight!

"Hey everyone! My name is Christine and I love being a dental hygienist. I also love having sharp instruments on hand to make scaling easier. That’s why I started sharpening instruments regularly nearly 15 years ago - no one wants to scale with instruments as dull as butter knives! Acuti Sharpening is here to help make your jobs easier by giving you the cutting edge you need to scale efficiently AND effectively. I’m a mom to four kids, I love a good hot yoga workout, and I’ll tell anyone about the oral-systemic link that will listen to me!"

Cofounder Spotlight:

"Hi! I'm Melia, a cofounder of Acuti Sharpening. I've been in dental hygiene for 14 years, but dentistry for as long as I can remember. I love being part of a dental team, and supporting those on the team. That's one of the reason's why starting a sharpening business was important to me- to support dental teams that are busy and don't have the time to take care of their instruments. I'm a mom two 2 daughters, love to travel, and am always talking about teeth."

"A recent survey of 151 dental professionals was completed to determine the prevalence of WMSD. The survey reported 58.3% had experienced WMSD within the last 12 months, 66.7% had experienced neck pain, and 33.11% had experienced pain in multiple sites."
Ashley Gemmecke, MSM, LDH, EFDA, NETA-CPT, NETA-CGEI, published on Today's RDH

Unfortunately, our profession of dentistry includes repetitive motions, and a high chance of musculoskeletal pain. To keep those repetitive motions down to a minimum, having sharp instruments is key. Have your instruments professionally sharpened by Acuti Sharpening!
