A Critical Refrigerant changeover is happening now – Get Your System Ready Before 2025

At Herchenbach Mechanical we want to keep our customers informed and aware of the new refrigerant change starting in 2025 and how it will affect your future replacement costs. This refrigerant change from R-410a to R-454b is causing the cost of the average air conditioning system to increase anywhere from $750 to $1500+.

The Herchenbach Mechanical team is always concerned with our customers bottom dollar. This is why we are recommending that if your system is old or in need of repair, to replace now and pay less now than the future costs of the new R-454b air conditioning equipment. Below you will find a deeper explanation of this refrigerant change and why it is happening for the better of our planet.

In 2024 the United States will be rolling out new regulations for HVAC systems to address environmental concerns and improve energy efficiency across our globe. These restrictions aim to enhance air quality, reduce energy consumption and mitigate the environmental impact of HVAC operations. The current refrigerant, R-410a, works well but has a high global warming potential (GWP), which means it contributes to climate change. Because of this, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has decided to phase out R-410a equipment by 2025 and replace it with R-454b.

The new R-454b refrigerant is “mildly flammable” and will require a new additional sensor in the indoor coil section to sense a refrigerant leak. If triggered, this sensor will then alarm the HVAC system and turn all equipment off and run the system fan to dissipate the new R-454b refrigerant. These additional safety’s are contributing to the additional costs the end user is now going to have to incur.

The EPA has implemented a 2025 sell through date of the existing expiring R-410a equipment. This is causing the existing supply of R-410a equipment to be depleting fast as all manufacturers are currently moving their manufacturing lines over to the new R-454b refrigerant equipment and all HVAC companies are trying to secure equipment to bring their bottom dollar costs down while R-410a equipment is available.
