On this day, 80 years ago, the 3-day battle that initiated Operation OVERLORD still stands as the largest amphibious invasion in history. Today, we honor the brave WWII service members of the Allied Forces Western Front, and the many who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Nearly 133,000 troops from the U.S., U.K. and allies landed on D-Day, and casualties from these countries during the landing numbered, 10,300. The Normandy Invasion, known as D-Day, delivered five naval assault divisions to the beaches of Normandy including: 7,000 ships, 11,000 warplanes, and landing craft manned by more than 195,000 naval personnel from eight Allied countries.
