Jumper's Sport Horses
Breeding wonderful athletic horses that are fun to ride
Fly season's in full swing and we're trying a new tack-fighting back with fly sheets! The horse flies here are huge & leave nasty welts. The long-acting repellent lasts about a week for most flies and a tad longer for ticks. The new sheets we scored are looking pretty spiffy, but who knows if they'll survive our horses' shenanigans? Gracie's got the older, stiffer mesh look locked down, Solly's going for the zebra stripe look, and Abby's sporting teal southwest style - hopefully, she'll get a little sun protection out of it, too - that zinc cream doesn't last a minute on her bum!
Casually considring leasing two mares for breeding with our stallion. Appaloosa( sport type), Thoroughbred, and Warmblood breeds preferred. Mares should not be closely related to our stallion J.S. Great Spot.Breeding would be by spring 2025, and mares will be returned, in foal, to their owners after weaning the 2026 foal. We are in central Kentucky. Any mare owners intersted in such an arrangement?
our ranch office now has it's own door and is separate from the guest house...small progress! Just need to put proper screws in the frame & finish painting it.
The switch worked, Bones keeps the fly mask with nose protection on whereas Phil took it off within 24 hours. Phil & Bones have swapped fly masks.
Freckles and Grace had their ultrasounds today....both are in foal to Hollywood Hot Spot! We are so excited to be having foals again! These will be the first foals to be bred & born in Kentucky.
Both the girls are ready! Semen requsted from Hollywood Hot Spot for insemination tomorrow.
Well, my best intentions of volunteering at the 3 day this week went in the toilet..er breeding shed ... my 2 mares came in heat this week & we've spent mornings at the vet for their ultrasounds....both have developed follicles slowly, so I'm hoping they kept to the pace & haven't sped up over the weekend. Hopefully they are ready for a semen shipment from Hollywood Hot Spot on Monday.
While I'm still getting back to physically able to ride again, I'm working on the ranch landscaping. Thanks to Jerome from last Friday's square dance! If he hadn't been 'slumming' from his usual contra dancing I wouldn't have been offered an extra 3 spirea bushes he'd dug for his wife( turned out to be 13 root clumps) that are now gracing tbe slopes outside the arena.
I've been doing a little work on YouTube, finally putting Hotsshot's video's in his own playlist so they are easier to find
We have retired JAS About Time, Hotshot's dam, from breeding- time just got away from me with the move. I took her in with another mare I planned to breed to an outside stallion and she's gotten to the stage in life where she'd need a Caslick to hold a pregnancy, and I won't do that to her. I thought she was only about 20, but looked at her papers and she's 24! The lady still looks great and she'll get to move on to grandmama duty as we'll put her daughter Amazing Grace in her stead. Video is of Abby and Grace when Grace was a weanling, what seems like yesterday.
Annemieke Buis is getting to know Gracie. She will be picking up her training, hopefully about where Jamie Bonovitz left off a year or so ago in Idaho.
Romy had a good lesson on Solly yesterday, working on extending, collecting & stretchy trot. He's getting closer to trusting her.
I don't know if this is a normal year, but the horses are still grazing pasture. I like it!
The fall colors sre coming!
Romy is getting aquainted with Solly- this is her second ride on him
We took advantage of the nice weather last Friday to give Hotshot a bath & take new photos. Now to pick the best ...
Pat's turn
Fly repellent day plus grooming & general check day at the ranch. Phil goes first
I love how the horses come out of the pasture with their feet looking like they've been polished.
The grooming area of my barn is almost complete! Rubber mats went down yesterday & the crossties should be up in a day or so.
Hotshot welcomes a new son- Sizzlin Diamond Eyes foaled a handsome leopard c**t! Congratulations to the Jensons!
My new arena is in, lacking only the fence paint when the boards are ready. Freckles & I had a good 15 minute walk around it, only my 3rd time in the saddle since breaking my pelvis in 2020. This time I didn't have too much stiffness or any muscle spasms. And only mild increase in pain when I asked for a leg yield on my side with the healed breaks. Progress!
The footing is going into the arena!
More ranch progress, we found a 3 horse trailer to replace the 2 horse we left in Idaho. Mobile agian for whatever we might need or want to do.
The mares are out front, mowing while we have a rainy week.
We got photo & video of Horshot's c**t today, what a handsome boy!
the barn paddocks are in & so is the round pen (except for the gate). They'll sit a while & be ready to paint.
the girls tried out the new dtalls today. Gracie & Freckles approved the training stalls, Phil & Abby were not so happy with the foaling stalls, but Abby should change her mind and like the privacy when the time comes
the girls are enjoying a sunbath after last nights storm
It's such a lovely evening here at tbe ranch
