This week we would like to introduce you to Patti Koenig, the longest working member of our Police Department! Patti has worked with Shelby Township for nearly 37 years! So, let’s recognize Patti who is the Executive Assistant to the Chief of Police!

Patti grew up in Roseville, attended Regina High School then Macomb Community College where she obtained her Associate Degree. She started her employment with the township as a co-op in 1986 working for the Department of Public Works. In 1988, she transferred to the Police Department and started in the Records Bureau. In 1992, she worked as the Detective Bureau Secretary and in a couple years she assumed the additional role of Computer Systems Analyst. She stayed in that role until 2001 when she became the Executive Assistant to the Chief of Police. Patti has worked for five Chiefs here at the department. The only Chief she did not work for was Chief Smith. Her current job involves a plethora of duties. Due to her tenure at the police department, she does everything from payroll, scheduling, budgets, financing and simply knowing the history of the department. She was involved in the designing and planning of the police department building in 2012 and the addition in 2018. If Patti doesn’t know the answer to something she will certainly find out and direct you to your answer. In other words, we value Patti and her dedication to the Shelby Township Police Department. In Patti’s off time, she loves to golf, travel, and play pickle ball! She and her husband have been married for 32 years and they have two athletic children together. Her son played football at Trine University and her daughter currently attends Central Michigan University where she plays softball. And can’t forget about their Labrador Retriever, Nelly!
Everyone say Hello to Patti Koenig!

Meet the Officer Monday is back not only with one Officer but TWO! Meet Officer Pink and his partner K-9 Kam. Officer Pink grew up in the Detroit area. He attended Grosse Pointe North High School and then the University of Detroit Mercy. Officer Pink was a Deputy with the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department for 17 years where he was an experienced K-9 handler. Officer Pink has been with the Shelby Twp. Police Department for just over a year now. He is part of the K-9 Unit and teamed up with K-9 Kam. His biggest accomplishment in his career is working with Kam as a trained bomb dog. Kam is a 1.5-year-old German Shepherd born in the Czech Republic and trained in the United States. He is trained in firearm detection, tracking, building searches, articles searches and handler protection. Kam lives with Officer Pink and when he’s at home he lives the life of a normal dog. But when Kam is at work he is full of energy and loves his job. When Officer Pink is not working, he enjoys spending time with his family, restoring classic cars and anything automobile related! He also has two other dogs at home: Faust (his retired K-9) and Wally. With that being said, Officer Pink loves training his dogs on and off duty. Please give a big Shelby Township welcome to Officer Pink and K-9 Kam!

On September 9, 2023, at 10:45 PM, officers were investigating a call about four individuals in a Cadillac Escalade shooting a gun at innocent people. A witness was able to obtain the license plate of the suspects’ vehicle, and that plate came back registered to a residence on the 51000 block of Clear Spring. Officers went to the residence to investigate, and observed the vehicle parked in the driveway. After interviewing people at the residence, officers decided to impound the vehicle as it was believed to have been used in the commission of a felony.

As the vehicle was in the process of being loaded up on the tow truck, the resident of the home, identified as 55-year-old Sam Kassab, started ordering his 15-year-old and 16-year-old sons to block the tow truck with another vehicle so it couldn’t leave. Kassab then began to push officers, at which point officers advised him he was under arrest. Kassab began fighting with one sergeant and one officer who were attempting to place him under arrest. Officers muscled Kassab to the ground and were attempting to handcuff him. At this point, Kassab’s 15-year-old son snuck up and violently attacked both the sergeant and officer who were attempting to arrest the elder Kassab. Additional officers arrived on scene, and all three were taken into custody. The tow truck driver was instrumental in helping to end the attack on the officers.

The sergeant and the officer were immediately conveyed to the hospital. The officer, who momentarily lost consciousness when he was attacked, was treated for a concussion and lacerations to the face. The sergeant was severely injured and was treated for a concussion, facial lacerations, broken orbital bones, and numerous broken bones in the face. The sergeant will need to follow up with a facial surgeon in the coming weeks. Both the sergeant and the officer continue to experience medical issues due to the violent assault and are unable to return to work at this time.

Sam Kassab was arraigned on September 11, 2023, on the following charges:

-Assault/Resist Police Officer Causing Serious Impairment
-Assault/Resist Police Officer Causing Injury
-Assault/Resist Police Officer

***At arraignment on September 11, 2023, visiting Judge LeDuc set bond at $600,000 Cash/Surety. On September 13, 2023, Judge Shepherd granted an emergency bond hearing, and Kassab was released from custody after his bond was reduced by Judge Shepherd to $100,000 Cash/Surety***

The 15-year-old juvenile was lodged at the Youth Home and charged with:

-Assault/Resist Police Officer Causing Serious Impairment
-Assault/Resist Police Officer Causing Injury
-Assault or Assault and Battery
-DNA – Refuse or Resist Providing Samples

***His bond was set at $500 Cash/Surety 10% ($50.00) by Referee Kristin Stone***

The 16-year-old juvenile was lodged at the Youth Home and charged with:

-Assault/Resist Police Officer (3 counts)

***His bond was set at $500 Cash/Surety 10% ($50.00) by Referee Kristin Stone***

***A 55-year-old resident of Troy, Michigan, was also arrested and charged with disorderly conduct***

Additional charges are pending against other subjects who were involved in the obstruction of this investigation.

“Our officers are committed to protecting our citizens from these random acts of violence by doing their part to hold these offenders accountable. We now have two officers off the road due to injuries and three offenders still on the streets.” – Robert Shelide, Shelby Township Police Chief.
