Dissociation is a word that’s commonly used but rarely explained. Dissociation is the ability to use different parts of your body for different purposes. It is needed for everyday activities in both childhood and adulthood, activities such as crawling, cruising, walking and playing ! Sometimes we see body parts “coupling” together during activities, examples might be bunnyhopping instead of crawling or difficulty in riding a bike !

Working on supported standing? Use both anterior and posterior support surfaces to work different muscle groups and target balancing the muscles on the front and back of the body. Looking for more? Lower surfaces in front allow kids to use their arms and core more, while higher surfaces force more weight through their legs!
Supporting regulation by reducing sensory stimuli in a cozy, dimly lit room. Sometimes less is more!
The Rifton Activity chair (featured with the Hi-Lo base) is a highly versatile and adaptable seating option, with a wide range of features that can be adjusted to suit the child’s size, needs and optimal positioning 💺 This is a quick reference guide for how to make some of these common adjustments, that can all be completed without tools! 🔧 Let us know if there is other equipment you want to see demonstrated like this!
Who did it better?! We love connecting with our kids and being silly in whatever way they like! This helps build motivation to continue developing skills, like typing a long sentence on their device!
Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (frequently called NMES or e-stim) is one modality we love to keep in our back pocket. Here is a wonderful example of how e-stim can help improve function. Can you see the difference?
We love helping our kids play the sports they want to play! What sport does your child enjoy? 🏉 🏀 🥊 ⚽️🎾🏊♀️
The SPIO (Stabilizing Pressure Input Orthoses) vest is a compression garment designed to provide support and sensory feedback to children with reduced core activation, strength, postural control and/or sensory processing difficulties. The SPIO vest is highly flexible and provides precise, deep pressure around the midline of the body to support: - Body awareness and postural control - Coordination, balance and muscle activation - Shoulder, trunk and hip stability - Active participation and progress towards goals 🌟
Touch devices can be a motivating tool to support a child’s learning, fine motor development and visual motor integration 🖍️🧩🎯 They can help children understand cause and effect, by providing immediate, sensory-rich feedback in response to purposeful movement (e.g. the child learns that bringing their hand to the device will cause fun visual and auditory effects) These are just a few suggestions for free apps that can work on finger isolation, visual tracking and fine motor dexterity/precision! 👆👀
Navigating the lunch room with a tray requires dynamic balance, motor planning, coordination and body/safety awareness. Check out these OTs as they turn family goals into a functional NeuroSuit activity!
Swings can be used for more than regulation! They are a great way to make core strengthening more fun and challenging by adding an unstable surface. Here are few options to try! - decline sit ups on the glider swing - plank pike ups - elbow plank with arms on platform swing - v ups with resistance

The Galileo Vibration plate is available across our NAPA clinics and a tool we use regularly! It provides a side alternating motion that can transmit energy to the individual standing, sitting, lying or kneeling. It can deliver up to 4,500 muscle contractions in a 3 minute time frame to support: • Reduction of spasticity • Improvement of muscle strength and power • Increased range of motion and flexibility • Improved balance • Improved gait speed. Have you tried this at our clinics?
Who doesn’t love a good obstacle course! 🙌 Building and navigating different obstacles can be a super fun way to engage children in active movement, improve gross motor skills, and provide lots of sensory input through play! Obstacles courses can be tailored to suit a child’s age and level of mobility, whether that be rolling and crawling, stepping or incorporating higher level tasks like climbing and swinging from ropes!
Just another day at the office.. except today our management team tested their dexterity skills. Let’s just say it was a balancing act! Who should we add to the treatment schedule 😉?
We love incorporating a child’s service dog into therapy sessions at NAPA! Some of the many ways our hard-working service dogs can contribute to promoting a child’s independence and safety include: 🐾 motivation for functional ambulation, like using mobility equipment to takes steps and give a treat! 🐾 providing stability and support for transitioning from lying down to sitting up! 🐾 and, of course, so many snuggles to support self-regulation!
