Culture, Community, & Connection

Mental illness can affect people of all races and ethnicities. This month, bring awareness to the unique struggles that racial and ethnic minority communities face regarding mental illness in the United States. Stigma and discrimination cause minorities to struggle in silence. Share stories and experiences to raise awareness. Confront and break down harmful systemic barriers that perpetuate mental health inequalities in communities of color by speaking up.

"World Elder Abuse Awareness Day ( ) was launched on June 15, 2006 by the International Network for the Prevention of and the World Health Organization at the United Nations.

Abuses can range from:

- Targeted for transnational fraud schemes (e.g., Jamaican lottery and technical-support scams)
- Nursing homes denying Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries essential nursing services
- Physical abuse
- Psychological abuse
- Financial exploitation (e.g., person taking or spending money without permission, selling or using things without permission, forced to sign legal documents, etc.)
- Neglect and abandonment
- S*xual abuse

Only one in 24 cases of elder abuse is ever reported. Up to five million older Americans are abused every year, and the annual loss by victims of financial abuse is estimated to be at least $36.5 billion, suggesting that public awareness remains a critical need in the fight against elder abuse.
