Lincoln City Libraries
The Lincoln City Library & Reading Room Association was organized in 1875 and was officially incorporated as a City-owned, tax-supported institution in 1877. As the collection grew, it was moved three times until it was destroyed in a disastrous fire in 1899.
Through the efforts of William Jennings Bryan, the plight of our local library was brought to the attention of Andrew Carnegie. He financed a new library on a site purchased by Lincoln citizens, who had raised the money for the acquisition of the site one penny at a time. Thus, the first Carnegie library in Nebraska was built at 14th and N Streets, here in Lincoln.
As Lincoln grew, branch libraries sprang to life in various areas of the city. Today, Lincoln has a system of eight branches scattered throughout town. The Bennett Martin Public Library, built in 1962 thanks to a generous gift of $300,000 from Bennett Martin, still sits in the location of the original Old Main Library at 14th and O Streets.
As our community continues to grow, and as citizens adapt to new technologies, so does our library system. The Lincoln City Libraries Board of Trustees has taken the position that Lincoln needs a new Central Library located downtown to replace the Bennett Martin branch in order to keep up with the educational, informational, and community needs of our population. Planning for the future continues as we attempt to offer the very best of services to our community.
