Say bye to chicken and broccoli 🥦

Today is the last day of the Symposium! On Wednesday and gave a wonderful presentation about how to grow as a sports dietitian. BUT they also emphasized the need for sports dietitians throughout the world.

Whether you are just discovering fitness or are a professional athlete - nutrition is essential. If you have any questions about how to improve performance, reach out to a local dietitian. We are your performance nutrition experts and will do whatever it takes to help you succeed in your sports career.

Day 1 of is in the books! We hosted a variety of session from leading experts in the performance nutrition field, including this one! If you’re attending, what was your favorite Day 1 session?

I’m attending my 4th session for the Sports, Cardiovascular, and Wellness Nutrition Symposium, and I am learning SO MUCH!!

From starting a sports nutrition practice, to digital twins, to the microbiome and performance, and now lessons in performance nutrition from warfighters ( expect to see some info from this), I am having the BEST TIME!!!

There is so much that a registered dietitian can do for you and your athletic performance that trainers and health coaches just can’t do because they aren’t qualified.

A registered dietitian can tailor a program to you based on your needs rather than giving you a one size fits all program.

This next spotlight is on a topic that’s always highly requested, relevant, and evolving: supplements!

Eric Rawson, PhD, FACSM, CSCS will present “Dietary Supplements and Performance: Do We Have a Consensus?”

Recently, the International Olympic Committee assembled a panel of experts to review the use of dietary supplements by elite athletes. Comprehensive review articles were prepared and distributed to the panel before the meeting to encourage discussion.

After several days of dialogue, the group concluded that dietary supplements are a legitimate part of an athlete’s preparation and can play a role in supporting health, training, and performance in competition.

These conclusions were published in a consensus statement that summarized the evidence that supports dietary supplement use in elite athletes. The consensus statement is available as an open access manuscript in both the British Journal of Sports Medicine and the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism. Comprehensive review articles developed by the panel members are also available open access in the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism.

Learning Objectives:
• Identify dietary supplements that may improve athletic performance.
• Identify issues related to dietary supplement safety in athletes.
• Describe the hierarchy of evidence used to establish good practice for dietary supplements.

For our next speaker spotlight, we turn our sights to Robert A. Huggins, PhD, LAT, ATC. He will be presenting the session “Developing and Implementing Heat Polices and Hydration Protocols for Athletes”

Dr. Huggins is the Assistant Research Professor, President of Research & Athlete Performance and Safety, Korey Stringer Institute and Director, ATLAS Project.

While many organizations indicate that they have heat policies and hydration protocols in place, many lack the recommended evidence-based components of these heat and hydration policies and protocols. While many members of the sports medicine team (athletic trainers, sports dietitians, strength and conditioning coaches, and physicians) develop, adopt, and implement these policies and protocols with their athletes and teams, many organizations and individual athletes still struggle with avoiding heat illness and optimizing hydration status.

Therefore, the purpose(s) of this presentation are to:
1️⃣review the evidence-based medicine best practices & policies for avoiding heat illness and optimizing fluid replacement
2️⃣quantify heat stress limits
and normal fluid and electrolyte needs
3️⃣determine when an athlete’s current heatacclimatization status and fluid/electrolyte replacement plan is inadequate, and
4️⃣determine when heat acclimation coupled with advanced fluid and electrolyte testing are required for
optimizing performance.

Attendees will be able to:
- Identify the components of a heat policy and comprehensive hydration protocol
- Measure and interpret the level of heat stress/acclimatization an athlete has and the amount of fluids an athlete needs.
- Determine whether an athlete is heat acclimatized and has normal or abnormal fluid and electrolyte needs.
- Produce an intervention plan for an athlete who requires heat acclimatization and increased fluid and electrolyte needs.
- Distinguish when traditional intervention plans are inadequate and evaluate the need for more advanced physiological athlete specific testing.

Registration is open now, so head over to the website to learn more!

We’d like to introduce you to our next speaker in this Spotlight Series for the virtual 2021 !

Dr. Peter Peeling, Associate Professor at the University of Western Australia, will present “Iron and the Athlete: Key Considerations and Nutrition Strategies”

Peter received his PhD from the University of Western Australia in 2009, where he investigated exercise-induced mechanisms relevant to iron deficiency in endurance athletes. This work highlighted the potential influence of the iron-regulatory hormone, hepcidin, on iron metabolism. Peter has since worked as an applied sports physiologist within the Australian National Sports Institute Network, and he currently holds the role of Research Director at the Western Australian institute of Sport. Peter is also an Associate Professor in the School of Human Sciences at the University of Western Australia, where he teaches and researches in applied physiology, with a focus on sports nutrition and the iron requirements of athletes.

Here’s another session spotlight from the upcoming 2021 !

Carrissa Tomas, MS, RDN, CNSC, Captain in the United States Air Force, will present the session “Embedding Nutrition Professionals to Optimize Health and Performances of Military Personnel”

The Air Force has a long history of providing integrated support in the form of embedded flight surgeons and medical technicians, but the use of nutrition professionals on the teams is a much newer concept. This presentation will discuss the role of nutrition professionals on the Air Force’s new initiative, the base Operational Support Team.  The intent of this new multidisciplinary team is to improve military mission success and enhance human weapon system performance by using data to provide targeted, time-limited preventative interventions for Air Force line units.

This session will summarize the embedding process, data collected and successful interventions trialed across five different units, as well as highlight lessons learned as this program expands Air Force-wide.

OBJECTIVES
1. Recognize the role that nutrition professionals play in optimizing mission and human performance.
2. Describe the process of embedding within Air Force line units as part of the Operational Support Team.
3. Explain strategies to achieve buy-in, nutrition interventions applied, and lessons learned in standing up a nutrition program for specific populations.

This presentation will emphasize the importance of registered dietitian nutritionists on multidisciplinary teams to promote health and optimize performance. RDNs can benefit from learning lessons from the roll out of a new program and learning about opportunities arising for military nutrition as they transition to calibrated and preventative care.

Don’t miss it, register today!

For our next speaker spotlight, we are introducing Chris McGlory, PhD!

Dr. McGlory is an Assistant Professor at Queen’s University. He will present “The Role of Omega-3 Fatty Acids in Skeletal Muscle Anabolism”

The aim of his research is to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms underpinning the adaptive response of skeletal muscle to exercise training and disuse.

He is particularly interested in developing nutritional interventions to minimize a loss of muscle mass and/or function in a variety of settings, such as that which occurs in response to immobilization and surgery. He is currently examining the efficacy of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid and essential amino acid supplementation to influence muscle mass, protein synthesis, and mitochondrial function in response to exercise training and inactivity.

He specializes in the use of stable isotropic tracers to track skeletal muscle protein turnover during periods of fasting, feeding, training, and immobilization. His work also employs a range of specialist methodologies such as deuterium labeling of proteins and magnetic resonance imaging, as we as a variety of molecular biology techniques for measurement of enzyme activity, protein expression, and post-translational modification.
