Culture, commerce, and environmental stewardship are just a few of the many reasons why Washington State has committed to replacing aging fish passageways.

For this project located in the Pacific Northwest, Jensen Precast replaced an old narrow corrugated pipe with a brand new wide open precast concrete culvert.

Local stakeholders prefer precast concrete culvert for fish passageways because they are quick to install, provide long-term durability, and the quality is always guaranteed because the product is made in a controlled environment.

Here is an excerpt from our recent case study on this project:

“It’s probably one of the biggest structures we’ve built in quite a while,” says Brandon Wiltzius, PMP, Jensen Precast Puyallup Project Manager.

The before and after photos show a dramatic transformation from a rusted pipe surrounded by vegetation to a wide-open streambed.

“It was just a tiny little culvert pipe,” Wiltzius says. “The fish couldn’t get up or down, so there was a total blockage of their habitat upstream.”

For this reason, the Shine Creek culvert needed to be massive.

Seton Construction in Port Townsend, Washington, partnered with Jensen Precast as the contractor on Shine Creek and the nearby project at Swansonville Creek.

“Both structures were pretty large,” says Gairrett Orelup, Seton Construction Project Manager.

“As far as culverts go, they were very sizeable. We excavated about 47’ deep and needed to add about 20’ of fill over the tallest portion of the culvert.”

Seton Construction and Jensen Precast have teamed up on other fish passage culverts in recent years.

“From past experiences, the product that Jensen produces is really the best we’ve seen as far as quality of these precast pieces,” Orelup says. “These were cast in a way that we had no issues when we were setting them.”

Environmental stewardship comes with the territory for Jensen Precast's Puyallup, Washington location. Since 2021, we've worked closely with local stakeholders to provide over 25 fish passageways to replace aging and neglected infrastructure.

Last year, Jensen produced one of our biggest culverts yet in the Pacific Northwest. This massive type three culvert is 127 feet long and nearly 20 feet high, with bases that weigh 46,000 pounds each.

Watch Tim Nyhus, General Manager of our Puyallup, Washington facility describe the Shine Creek culvert and explain why Washington State is serious about updating fish passageways.

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a nearly 18,000-pound sand-oil interceptor swooping through the air.

This 1,500 gallon interceptor is being installed at a car wash to capture oil, grime, grit, and more before it enters the sanitary sewer system.

These products are crucial components in our infrastructure lessening the burden on treatment facilities while preventing bad stuff from clogging our sewer system.

When Nick Sciabica and his family decided to start a brewery, they knew they wanted to grow their own hops.

And why not? They have successfully grown grapes and olives in Modesto, California for nearly 100 years.

But, a new crop means a new trellis system. They had experience with wood but weren't fans of the short lifespan. They looked into steel but were concerned it could rust out at the bottom in their farm's soft soil.

Finding a trellis system that checked all their boxes seemed like a tall task.

It appeared near impossible to find a trellis post with heights up to 24 feet, extreme longevity, and loads of accessories that make hop binding simple.

Until they discovered Harvest Pillar by Jensen Precast.

Harvest Pillar is the first concrete trellis post manufactured in the United States. They are durable, strong, tall, and most important to Nick, extremely long-lasting.

Now, Nick Sciabica and his family have a trellis system they can pass down to the next generation of farmers in the family.

It's typical to see Jensen Precast products piled up on job sites during excavation. As dirt exits, precast concrete enters.

Manholes, drop inlets, vaults, risers, handholes, transformer pads, and more.

Precast concrete is the roux that turns every project into a delicious gumbo.

So, the next time you see a new project breaking ground, drive by really slowly and count all the precast ingredients on site.

Odds are you might see a Jensen Precast product.

What happens when an underground electric vehicle charging station nestled in a narrow alleyway needs a custom cover slab both nimble enough to move for future upgrades and beefy enough to handle HL-93 traffic loads?

They call Jensen Precast.

The AVA Arts District building is a new apartment development in Downton Los Angeles. One of the many amenities they offer their tenants is access to an underground parking garage with an electric vehicle charging station.

With the electric vehicle market expected to expand over the next 10 years, the owners wanted the ability to retrofit their property with additional charging stations should the need arise. To accomplish this, they would need an access opening.

But, the only area to place the access opening would be a narrow alleyway meant for deliveries or emergency service vehicles, also known as super heavy trucks.

After contacting Jensen Precast, Brandon Bates, a Project Manager at our Fontana facility specializing in custom projects, worked hand-in-hand with the customer to deliver them a tailor made slab of precast concrete.

"The slab is cast with threads that allow the customer to insert swivel hoist lifting rings," says Bates. "If they ever have to remove the cover slab, they'll pop the caps off, put the swivel coil bolts back in, and get a crane to lift the lid."

Jensen Precast employs a dedicated team of engineers and project managers ready to tackle any custom project potential customers can dream of.

"We can do anything," says Bates. "We can do different variations of our standard products or something completely custom. If they need a bigger opening in this area, or their height needs to be increased by a few inches here or there, we can do it."

After engineering and manufacturing a custom slab that fit the building owner's requirements, there was still one last hurdle to clear, delivery.

"We actually did a job walk beforehand and sent out the flatbed to make sure it can even make it down the road," says Bates. "It was a tricky location that required some communication with the contractor. The truck and crane had to go down opposite sides of the alley and the crane had no room to swing left or right."

If you have a project in need of a custom precast concrete product, contact Jensen Precast, we love a challenge.

Two months.

That's how long it took San Bernadino County to reopen a vital passageway in Oak Glen, California ravaged by Tropical Storm Hillary.

Just two months.

When San Bernadino County flood officials reached out to our Jensen Precast Fontana branch, we did everything in our power to make sure we could provide them with a precast box culvert.

And fast.

Here is an excerpt from a recent project profile:

With restaurants destroyed, homes lost, and residents shaken, San Bernadino County flood officials knew they had to act fast to restore Oak Glen’s main thoroughfare. Luckily, federal emergency funds expedited the typically tedious process.

“I can’t even describe to you how hard it is to get something out,” says David Drake, Division Chief of Flood Control Design for San Bernadino County. “So, when I was allowed to do this under an emergency, it gave me a chance to show off and use tricks that agencies don’t typically use.”

For Jensen Precast’s Fontana, California, facility, which happens to reside in San Bernadino County, this meant an opportunity to get creative for the community where many of the employees reside.

“We looked into our engineering and found a design that was similar to what they were looking for, something we’ve done in the past,” says Tom Morales, General Manager of Jensen Precast’s Southern California Operations. “So, we were able to use that existing design, we submitted it to them, and they turned it around in a couple of days.”

With engineering ready to go, production had to act fast to keep up with the breakneck speed of this project.

“We manufactured the parts we needed in house,” Morales says. “We manufactured the steel cage here so we could jump right into production within a week from getting approval on the submittals.”

Behind refilling our water reservoirs, stormwater's second favorite hobby is introducing trash and pollutants into our precious waterways. Streams, rivers, creeks, and even the ocean are no strangers to the wrath of rain runoff. When bad stuff enters our stormwater systems, it hurts humans and animals alike.

That's why many local governments, especially in coastal regions, are retrofitting their infrastructure with stormwater management systems that capture the bad stuff before it can cause real havoc.

Jensen Precast and our dedicated water resources experts recently helped San Jose move one step closer to their clean water goals with a dual Jensen Deflective Separator.

Here is an excerpt from one of our recent projects:

At the heart of the Jensen Deflective Separator lies its unique ability to capture both large objects and small pollutants before they make their way to the ocean. This includes trash, debris, oil, grease, sand, grit, and more. Captured trash and pollutants remain in the JDS unit while screened stormwater is distributed to the rest of the storm drain system.

“The JDS setup in San Jose will result in the removal of litter from surrounding creeks, waterways, and ultimately the San Francisco Bay,” says Christopher Purdie, Sales Operations Manager at Jensen Precast, who served as an onsite representative during the installation. “The dual JDS was required to achieve the city’s Stormwater Quality Flow Rate for this site.”

This JDS unit utilizes two 12’ diameter precast concrete manholes, with a flow splitting vault in between the two structures. The unit is part of San Jose’s Large Trash Capture Device Installation Phase XII, an initiative to install trash capture devices on the city’s storm drain system. The goal is to provide 100 percent trash load reduction by July 2025.

Nice article in the Yakima Valley Business Times on the benefits of our concrete trellis post system for vineyards, hop yards, orchards, and more. Thank you!

Concrete Company Aims To Cement Itself In The Ag Industry

Jensen Precast looks to revolutionize the U.S. agriculture trellis system with its flexible Harvest Pillar. The concrete post is ideal for vineyards, orchards, hop farms or any setting where a trellis system is utilized.

The post has been used in Europe and Australia for decades but is now made in America exclusively by Jensen Precast.

“They have an organic application — they are not treated with any preservatives like treated wood and won’t rot or rust,” George Kehagias, director of product management at Jensen Precast said. “They are more cost-effective than wood or steel posts, offering growers a trellising option focused on longevity and durability.

The posts are designed to be sturdy and flexible, meaning fewer replacements and repairs, plus the ability to withstand repeated mechanical harvesting.

Kehagias said growers in Washington can currently get the product shipped to them from California in a matter of days, but also indicated that if the market develops, Jensen could expand operations into Washington state by late fall. Visit harvestpillar.com for information.

Check out this late afternoon birdseye view of a few monolithic manhole bases.

In Northern California, monolithic manhole bases for sanitary applications are all the rage. With the help of a specialized machine, we carve out foam inserts and pour concrete around them to create a perfectly smooth channel for wastewater. Sanitary manhole channels must be extremely smooth to prevent toilet paper and other waste from getting stuck and potentially causing a costly clog.

Furthermore, hand channeling is tough to do in the field, and quality isn't always guaranteed. With precast concrete, on the other hand, quality is never in doubt because your product is manufactured and double checked in a controlled environment.

Talk about awkward.

Here's an old cast-in-place manhole base riding the tractor of doom to rebar heaven aka the rocky graveyard. To make matters worse, it had to pass by its precast replacement during the slow march.

Precast manhole stacks are the most cost effective solution for sewer and storm drain projects. You don't have to wait for the concrete base to cure, you know the quality is consistent, the chances of infiltration are lower, and the whole thing goes in the ground right off the truck.

Just another reason why precast concrete is the way to go.
