Sowing Discord at Minnesota's Seed Art Competition 06/09/2023

Interesting article on the Minnesota Crop Art competition!

Sowing Discord at Minnesota's Seed Art Competition At the Minnesota State Fair, some crop artists promoted timely political messages with corn, quinoa, and flax seeds.

We were inspired to start our very own Crop Art competition when Ginny Shatto came across the Minnesota State Fair Seed Art competition and suggested that the Dillsburg Farmers Fair could have some fun with it also. This is our 21st year for our 2D competition and 14th for our 3D competition and we are looking forward to this year's crop. Here's just a very small sampling of some of the Crop Art entries over the years!

There's nothing corny about this wonderful announcement! Local Dillsburg Farmers Fair Crop Artist Candy Weaver has her take on Vermeer's 1665 painting widely known as Girl with a Pearl Earring featured on a national Crop Art site! The Minnesota State Fair is the true home of Crop Art and was the inspiration for the contest at the Dillsburg Farmers Fair. This year the Minnesota folks published this page of Fine (Crop) Art which shows side by side versions of famous paintings and their Seed versions by Crop Art artists. We're very proud that Dillsburg's own Candy Weaver has joined this impressive group! Congrats Candy! Check out the other Fine Art and their Seedy versions here.https://www.cropart.com/Interpreting%20fine%20works%20of%20art%20in%20seeds.pdf

From inception to finished piece: What it takes to create crop art 03/09/2021

From inception to finished piece: What it takes to create crop art What does it take to truly create a standout piece of crop art? From the idea to showing it off at the Minnesota State Fair, artist Christy Klancher takes us through her process.

2D or not 2D? That is the 2021 CROP ART question!

It’s been nineteen lucky years since the traditional Dillsburg Farmers Fair Crop Art competition got under way and twelve years for the 3D Crop Art competition. The traditional Crop Art contest is for flat or 2D entries. These are flat pieces that could be hung on a wall. The 3D competition adds another dimension to the contest. These 3D entries are more like a sculpture that would sit on a table. See Events Calendar for days and times the Community Hall is open for entries during Fair week.

The Rules: Traditional Crop Art (2D)

This contest calls for entrants to create a piece of artwork entirely out of dry seeds and beans. Entries in this category would include but are not limited to portraits, landscapes, and other pictures that would normally be painted. Submitted artwork will be judged on overall artistic merit, cleverness of subject, technique, originality, and skill. The natural color of the seeds and beans provides the only pigment to the pictures as no paint or dyes are allowed. Only seeds and beans that are used for crops that can be grown in Pennsylvania may be used. No portion of the seedpod is to be used in the artwork. The artwork is to be completely and exclusively created from whole and unadulterated naturally colored seeds and beans. Seeds should be affixed permanently to the flat surface with a clear or invisible adhesive. A clear protective finish may be applied. Seed portion of artwork must be less than ¾” thick. (If work is mounted on ½” thick board the total thickness of entry must be less than 1 ¼’.) Seeds may be layered or partially layered on top of one another as long as the total thickness doesn’t exceed ¾”. Crop Art pictures are to be no larger than 400 square inches in area and mounted on a stiff flat board such as plywood. It is not necessary that the board be rectangular. Pictures may have frames but frames are not required. No portion of mounting board is to be visible. Mounting board must be completely covered with seeds. There should not be glass or plastic covering the artwork. An unsigned 4” by 6” legend card must accompany the artwork with title and samples of the seeds used in the artwork clearly and neatly identified.

Prizes for the contest are as follows:
18 Years and Older -First prize- $100, Second prize- $75, and Third prize- $50

A Thanksgiving Compendium of Go Big or Go Home 02/12/2019

Crop Art, or Seed Art, got it's start in the U.S. in the late 1880's as part of a campaign to get people from the east coast to come out west and populate their just started towns and cities. A promoter suggested that by doing something stupid with precious food would convince people of the bounty to be had out west. Sioux City was the first town to build a Corn Palace, a large Moorish palace covered with corn and the inside had displays of "Seed Art". Fine art sculptures in butter were also on display. That's why the PA Farm Show has a butter sculpture every year. As part of the campaign to impress upon Easterners the abundance of food out west there were exaggerated postcards showing impossibly sized farm crops. I don't think anyone was really fooled by this early bit of Photoshop work. Enjoy these pics and don't forget to check out the Dillsburg Farmers Fair Crop Artist entries at the PA Farm Show in January.

What a harvest of 3D Crop Art this year! The judges were half expecting to see Sherrie Stambaugh's little bunny twitch it's nose and hop off down the table. What patience and skill is needed to make such a lifelike sculpture out of seeds! Close on the bunny's heels was a spectacular Farmers Fair 2017 Pumpkin with geometric patterns that wowed the judges. Puffing into a very close third place was C**t Seltzer's friendly little dragon. Very creative and well done! An Honorable Mention goes to 11 year old Madisyn Billingsly for her stunning Polar Bear, stopped in his tracks, his freshly caught fish dinner interrupted by Madisyn's presence. Rounding out the 3D Crop Art offerings this year were Deana Weaver's lovely pot of flowers and Debra Cochran's seed covered antlers. Congrats to all the winners and thanks to all for sharing your artistic talents with all of us!
