After 57 years, the Oakland Athletics have played their last game at the Coliseum. Could not ask for a better crew to cover this historic event, telling the stories of what the team has meant to everyone over the years. šŸ’ššŸ’›āš¾ļø

Another legend is leaving KPIX - photographer Robert R. Horn. Last night we were able to get everyone together to celebrate. Bob and I covered basically all the big fires together, and I can honestly say there is no one else Iā€™d rather put it all on the line with than him. So many great stories, and so many memories.

Enjoy your well deserved retirement, Bob!! You will be greatly missed.

Itā€™s the end of an era. Brian Yuen is retiring from KPIX CBS San Francisco Bay Area after more than 25 years at the station.

We worked together on my very first day at the station more than 6 and a half years ago, and we got to work together on his last full day. Somehow it just seemed fitting.

Brian made us all better because he cared so much about the stories we tell, and put his passion, effort and energy into them every single day.

The reporter-photographer relationship is a partnership. When it works, itā€™s magic. Some of the stories Iā€™m most proud of in my career I had the chance to tell with Brian. Iā€™m forever grateful for your dedication to the craft, the passion you brought to every story, and also our friendship. I know you arenā€™t going far, but I am going to miss working with you more than you could ever know. Good luck my friend, and I look forward to seeing you out in the field.

Itā€™s Halloween and this guy is trying to steal my seatā€¦ and maybe my job?? šŸŽƒ I doubt heā€™ll last the rest of the day, because he seems easily rattled. šŸ˜‰

Love your sense of humor Brian Yuen! Thanks for making people smile today as they walked past the KPIX CBS San Francisco Bay Area van!

Happy Halloween everyone!! šŸŽƒšŸ‘»

Today marks the start of National Service Dog Month honoring the hard work and life-changing impact service dogs make on people with disabilities every day. Canine Companions is a non-profit that provides service dogs to adults, veterans and children with disabilities at no cost to the recipient. The best part is they are based in our own backyard in Santa Rosa. Take a few minutes to check out their page, if you havenā€™t already.

By the way, Krystal is the dog in the picture with me. Sheā€™s a service dog in training at the Santa Rosa campus. Once sheā€™s completed her training she will be matched with a recipient and do things like help open doors, pick up dropped items, turn on and off lights, and open and close drawers.

What can be more fun that playing with puppies?? How about playing with dozens of them, and not just any puppies - future and current service dogs who are literally changing peopleā€™s lives?

I had the extreme privilege of emceeing the Canine Companions Sit, Stay, Sparkle Gala last night in Santa Rosa where the event raised more than $400,000 to provide service dogs to adults, children and veterans with disabilities at no cost to the recipient.

If you havenā€™t heard about their mission, please take a few minutes to check out their page. If you need more incentive, they have lots of pictures of cute puppies. šŸ˜‰

Happy 5 year PIX-iversary to me!

5 years ago today I came to KPIX CBS San Francisco Bay Area and I can honestly say it was one of the biggest blessings of my life.

Iā€™m honored and grateful for those who have allowed me to share their stories over the years. Iā€™m privileged to work with some of the most creative, intelligent, ethical and compassionate journalists in our industry - many of whom Iā€™m lucky to call friends.

Hereā€™s to many more years to come!

26/11/2021

I was lucky enough to spend Thanksgiving working and sharing the stories of firefighters who were celebrating the holiday with their second family, their work family.

This is not comedy. Itā€™s not funny. Itā€™s hate speech.

Betty Yu is a fellow reporter at KPIX CBS San Francisco Bay Area and has been breaking story after story about hate crimes being committed against those in the AAPI communities here in the Bay Area.

She does not deserve this kind of treatment. No one does.

According to Mashable - he was recently suspended by YouTube for another segment that was considered hate speech targeting the transgender community.

4 years ago today the Tubbs Fire roared into Santa Rosa, and with it changed everything we thought we knew about wildfires in California. Such a destructive fire was once in a generation, once in a lifetimeā€¦ but now itā€™s an almost annual occurrence.

4 years seems like enough time to dull the sharp edges of those memories, but as someone who was there that day and experienced a small part of what the residents experienced, I can tell you itā€™s not. This is the anniversary for thousands of people who lost their homes or lost loved ones. I wish you all peace and healing.

I had the privilege of hosting Canine Companions annual Sit Stay Sparkle Gala virtually this year with James Dern, National Senior Puppy Program Manager.

The event raised more than $660,000 for the Santa Rosa based non-profit. Canine Companions for Independence provides expertly trained service dogs to adults, children, and veterans with disabilities completely free of charge. Theyā€™ve even launched a new program to help veterans with PTSD through specially trained dogs to help manage their triggers.

Once you spend time with these incredible dogs, itā€™s easy to see how they can literally change the life of someone in need.

The live virtual event was Saturday night, but you can still donate or watch the event at:

This was my drive along Highway 50 coming down from Echo Summit around 5:30pm. Itā€™s a well known stretch where typically you get your first panoramic views of Lake Tahoe and the entire basin. There are quite a few pull outs because itā€™s such an amazing sight. Today, it was a very different scene.

I was so honored to be a part of the San Francisco screening the new documentary, Bring Your Own Brigade. I had the chance to sit down with filmmaker Lucy Walker after the screening to lead a Q&A about her journey with the creation of the documentary. Itā€™s playing now or will begin streaming on Paramount+ and CBSN on August 20.

The Oakland City Council voted yesterday to remove $18.4 million from the Oakland Police Department budget and instead use the fund for community & social services as well as violence prevention programs.

Police were able to get these surveillance camera photos of the two men they say were using my credit cards immediately after my purse, wallet and work bag were stolen. Within a few hours of all my stuff being taken, my credit cards were used at Target, Taco Bell, Nordstrom Rack, Home Depot and Best Buy in the Emeryville shopping center. The shopping spree totaled more than $4,000.

It got me thinking about the old adage, ā€œHurt people hurt people.ā€ What happened in the lives of whoever did this that they feel itā€™s ok to victimize others? Were they never shown empathy or kindness, so they cannot feel compassion for others?

Did they think about how violating it would make me feel to have everything stolen on my first day back from maternity leave? Did they think about the fact they literally stole my ability to feed my 8-week-old baby by stealing my breast pump and bottles of milk? Did they think about all the time and money it would take for me to try to replace everything in my wallet, my purse, and my work bag (including makeup bag & brushes, ear pieces I use on air called IFBs, etc)? They have no use for those things, but they mean the world to me. Did they think about that? Do they care?

We can all agree the residents of Oakland deserve to live in a town thatā€™s safe. Whatā€™s the best way to accomplish that? What is the best way to keep whoever stole from me from victimizing someone else? Is it more officers on the street? Harsher punishments and jail time? Or is it investing in community and social programs to prevent people from turning to crime in the first place? The Oakland City Council decided the latter will better serve the residents.

Side note - feel free to share these pics. Police told me they believe these men have been involved with a number of burglaries and robberies in the Fruitvale. If you recognize them, please DM me & I can connect you with the appropriate folks at Oakland Police Department & Alameda County Sheriff's Office who are handing the investigation.

Today was supposed to be my first day back at work after maternity leave. It was cut short when my truck was broken into in Oakland while on a story. The thieves made off with my purse and work bag, including my breast pump. All of it was tucked out of sight under the seats, and I was standing no more than 10 yards from my truck when it happened.

The story I was working on at the time? The Oakland City Councilā€™s vote tomorrow to potentially cut funding from the Oakland Police budget.

15/06/2021

Today is my 4 year PIX-iversary. During that time the Bay Area has seen life-altering wildfires, an historic social justice movement, and a global pandemic.

Through it all, I could not ask for a better newsroom to call home & team to call family. Most of all, Iā€™m humbly grateful to those who have entrusted us to tell their stories - those who have opened their lives, homes and businesses to us in an effort to inform the community. Thank you. I look forward to serving you for many years to come.
