YES!!

The new Chromebooks are here! THANK YOU, Mesa County voters, for approving the 2017 Bond Measure that was used to purchase these 9,068 Chromebooks, which will be delivered to schools over the next two weeks.

The D51 Technology Department used taxpayer dollars wisely, and negotiated a larger purchase than anticipated for the same price. They are also setting aside enough bond dollars to pay for another wave of Chromebooks in three years.

The new devices will be used by teachers and students to lower the student-to-device ratio in all D51 schools to at least 2 students per device and bring classroom learning into the 21st century!

Happy Friday!!

We are overjoyed to announce that today, May 18, 2018, School District 51 was awarded $13.9 million from the Building Excellent Schools Today (B.E.S.T) program, pending approval from the State Board of Education next month.

The grant will contribute nearly $14 million of the $40 million needed to build the new Orchard Mesa Middle School. This frees up $14 million in bond funding from Measure 3B to be spent on other capital projects. We will work with the D51 Long Range Planning Committee to determine how to spend the additional funds to best support students, staff, and community.

The state awards B.E.S.T grants on a yearly basis to assist with capital construction projects for public schools. B.E.S.T. grants are funded by ma*****na excise taxes, State Land Trust dollars, interest, and spillover revenue from the state lottery.

In addition to the extensive application process, B.E.S.T. grants applicants must prove they are able to match the funds, usually through a county-approved tax increase. In other words, the passing of 3A and 3B in November 2017 improved District 51’s chances of receiving the grant.

This is the district’s fourth attempt in 11 years to get a B.E.S.T. grant, and the first time we have received it. We are happy to have been selected from a pool of 52 applications for the 2018-19 grant cycle.

Congratulations Spencer Hurt for getting into Harvard!! Spencer's hard work and dedication won the election and now it's gotten him into the most prestigious university in the country, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

If you've signed up to help volunteer, you might have gotten a call from the very talented, Spencer! He is interning with us for this campaign and just generally wowing us with his passion, enthusiasm, and smarts. We know this kid is going places!

Here is a little introduction from him:

Hi! My name is Spencer Hurt, and I am a student at Central High School. Recently, I joined the Citizens for School District 51 campaign as an intern.

As a lifelong resident of Mesa County, I have attended and seen many schools in the area. It is a tragedy that many of them have deteriorated to their current state. My high school, CHS, has a crumbling foundation, end of life roofing, and poor ventilation; this isn’t even the worst of over 40 schools in D51.

When we don’t have enough technology for even half of our students, lack up to date textbooks, and have the bare minimum number of school days, we can’t expect kids to keep up with the rest of the country.

My peers and teachers deserve better; most importantly, Mesa County deserves better. Please support our students, teachers, and schools by volunteering for our campaign and voting for the Mill Levy override and bond this November.

More information about the bond we approved.

Think you'll be paying more for the bond because of a premium? Not so fast.

Homeowners will pay $9.42 per month for the bond and mill combined on a $200,000 home - less than the original projection of $9.89 a month. Without the premium, investment bankers have counseled us that the bond will not sell.

The benefits of having a premium include making the bonds appealing to buyers and potential earning enough to pay off construction of the R-5 High School/Summit School Program building that opened last year using certificates of participation.
