Ford is donating $1 million toward scholarship programs to help meet the demand for auto technicians throughout the industry. Park Outside: Stellantis Recalls Ram Trucks Due to Fire Risk

Stellantis is telling the owners of nearly 341,000 Ram diesel trucks to park them outdoors because an electrical connector can overheat and cause a fire. The company said Wednesday it’s recalling the trucks to replace the connectors after getting reports of six potentially related fires. In one case, the owner reported that a fire started after the truck’s engine was shut off.

Hyundai, Kia Launch Anti-Theft Software Upgrade

Hyundai and Kia have developed theft deterrent software for millions of their vehicles that lack an immobilizer and will provide it free of charge to vehicle owners. The software updates the theft alarm software logic to extend the length of the alarm sound from 30 seconds to one minute and requires the key to be in the ignition switch to turn the vehicle on.

Volkswagen Recalls ID.4 to Address Stalling Issue

Volkswagen initiated an ID.4 recall to address a stalling issue caused by software problems. The recall affects approximately 20,904 2021 ID.4 vehicles in the U.S.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published a post about VW’s ID.4 recall on Feb. 1. According to the German automaker, 2021 ID.4 cars have software issues that may cause the vehicle to stall while on the road.

Vehicle Dependability Improves Despite Continued Problems with Technology

The J.D. Power 2023 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), released Feb. 9, reports an industry average of 186 problems per 100 (PP100) vehicles, an improvement of 6 PP100 from 2022.

The study examines how 2020 model-year vehicles are currently performing in terms of quality, component replacement and appeal---including those vehicles with new technology---and helps automotive manufacturers design and build better vehicles to stand the test of time and promote higher resale value. A lower PP100 indicates higher performance.

Federal ‘Right to Repair’ Legislation Reintroduced in Congress

The Right to Equitable and Professional Auto Industry Repair (REPAIR) Act has been reintroduced by U.S. Reps. Neal Dunn, R-FL, Brendan Boyle, D-PA, Warren Davidson, R-OH, and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, D-WA.

The legislation will ensure the preservation of consumer choice, a fair marketplace and the continued safe operation of the nation’s 292 million registered passenger and commercial motor vehicles, 70% of which are maintained by independent repair facilities.

Honda Issues ‘Do Not Drive’ Warning for 8,200 Vehicles

Honda has issued a “do not drive” warning for an estimated 8,200 Hondas and Acuras believed to remain on the roads with unsafe airbags.

The “urgent, lifesaving recall” applies to certain 2001 to 2003 vehicles equipped with unrepaired Takata Alpha driver side bag inflators, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a statement.

More Than 460,000 Fords, Lincolns Recalled Over 360-Degree Camera Flaw

Ford has recalled more than 460,000 vehicles, including 382,759 in the U.S., to repair a rear view camera problem attributed to at least 17 accidents. The recall applies to the 2020-2023 Ford Explorer, 2020-2023 Lincoln Aviator and the 2020-2022 Lincoln Corsair.

The issue relates to 360-degree cameras, including the rear view camera, which can fail to feed visuals to the display screen during some “key cycles,” the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said in its report.

Nissan has a new design lifted off the digital world: literally. According to Driving.ca, Nissan has posted a placeholder link for a livestream scheduled for Feb. 1, where they plan to release the Max-Out concept car, first leaked in 2021 digital concept art. At its first showcase, the Max-Out was part of a series of vehicles demonstrating the final goal of Nissan’s Ambition 2030, a timetable forecasting the company’s plans to electrify the company’s product line.

Auto-Diagnosis: Ford Patents Camera-Based Damage Identification System

A new patent secured by Ford aims to record and report vehicle body damage instantaneously from the point of impact for immediate communication directly to partners such as insurance and rental companies, according to reporting from Ford Authority.

Filed on Oct. 6, 2020, published on Jan. 24, 2023 and assigned serial number 11562570, this latest patent from the Ford Motor Company describes a system that uses cameras integrated into a vehicle’s body to capture damage, from a large collision to a small parking lot door ding.
