What's your first response to this question posed on Facebook, "Sharon, what's on your mind today? Lupus Foundation of America, what's on your mind today?" Is it, "do you really want to know, whoever you are?" Or do you dive right in with whatever you were going to share? I often pause, repeat the question and proceed to my response. Today, I'm not pausing. I know what to say.

Thank You Carly's Bistro!!!!

We are coming together here at the end of Carly’s with a celebration of the music and lives of our friends Amy Lopez & Derrick Ross better known as Nowhere Man and A Whiskey Girl. This will feature our old friends who all performed at Carly’s over the years with Amy & Derrick. They used to play at our place quite a lot, often times when Amy was in treatment down the street for the Lupus that eventually claimed her life. and us have been talking about doing this for many years and we are so happy we finally get to pull this off. We will be passing the hat and trying to raise money for the Lupus Foundation of Southern Arizona in honor of our lost friends. We hope everyone can make it out to show support!

Great to see take the Arizona lead in working with his colleagues on the push for much-needed reform. This will have a direct impact on patients. https://rubengallego.house.gov/imo/media/doc/31524pbmhouseleadershipletter.pdf

Thank you Representative, Gallego, for working to address the exorbitant cost of necessary drugs to people who have lupus as well as other serious health issues. PMB reform is crucial sooner, not later.

The 4th Living with Lupus Support Group scheduled for this Saturday, November 18, 2023, at the Community Foundation Campus has been cancelled. The original speaker is no longer available, and we were unable to find a timely replacement. I enjoyed these Saturday morning gatherings and hope they were good for those of you who participated. Community is so important for us. The opportunities to learn, to share, to laugh, to cry, to create, to be together, to celebrate life make it all worthwhile. I will be planning next year's quarterly schedule soon, so if you have a topic you want to explore or know a speaker, or an activity we all might enjoy (i.e. coloring, outing at another venue), please let me know.

The Coffee Talk scheduled for Wednesday, December 6th, at 5:30 pm at the Community Foundation Campus, is a themed event, following in the footsteps of last year's Celebration of Gratitude. You don't want to miss this one! More details to follow.

Finally, we're looking for a few good people to help us make these events meaningful, memorable, challenging and more inclusive of our lupus population. If you have a bit of time and an idea or two, please give me a call at 303-594-3432. I'd love to have you join up! Thanks Everyone! Enjoy a peaceful, healthy Thanksgiving and know the Lupus Foundation of Southern Arizona is here to help.
Peace to all, Sharon

Last week we received notification from Deanna Kennedy, daughter of Lilly Depka, that her mom had passed away on August 2, 2023. She was the last living founder of the Lupus Foundation of Southern Arizona. A Memorial Mass will be offered at 11:00 am, Saturday, September 30, 2023, with Rosary preceding at 10:30 am at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church, 1800 S. Kolb Rd., Tucson.

I first met Jon and Lilly at the 2016 Gala which honored the founders of LFSA. My husband, Paul, and I had the privilege of sitting at their table and enjoyed a lovely evening. After the Gala, Lilly and I had some wonderful conversations about lupus, the beginnings of the foundation and life in general. I enjoyed her energy, insights and outlook on life and looked forward to one more opportunity in the weeks ahead when we received the call.

Many years ago, three women who had lupus and their husbands decided to form an organization focused on support and education about lupus. They also raised funds for research in hopes of finding a cure in their lifetime. Thank you, Lilly and Jon, Alecia and Gerry Merrill and Catherine Meyer for turning your idea into a reality. May we honor your memory in the programs and services we offer today to women and men with lupus.
