We've all heard the phrase "curb appeal" before, but how often do we really reflect on what it means to us? If first impressions are everything, then the view of your home from the curb is your first (and sometimes the last) opportunity to make a strong impression on visitors and casual passers-by alike. What statement do you want your house to make? What does your home say about you as a person? One of the simplest ways to increase the curb appeal of your home is to add a little color. Flower beds are just an anonymous feature of the landscape without color; plant some flowers here and there and add a little bit of life and light to your yard. Planting brightly colored flowers is a great way to make your property stand out from the crowd and give your home the attention it deserves.Suppose you don't have any flower beds. There's an answer for that, too: JMC landscaping. JMC landscaping has been a trusted name in southeast Michigan since 1986 for landscape design, construction, installation, and property maintenance. JMC has been planning, coordinating, and completing landscaping projects since 1986, and we're considered a regional authority on horticulture and landscape design. Make us your first call when you're thinking of adding some color to your yard.

Gardeners are known to wait for the end of winter and anticipate the start of spring. After winter is an unfavorable time to remove dead plants, but the gardener gets the chance to start anew with their landscaping endeavors. Spring is the best time to create another prosperous year of color. Using a landscaper is an ideal way to maintain a green area that contains a lawn or flower bed.A professional landscaper removes all dead, crumbling shrubs and branches before a proper spring garden is created. Otherwise, the garden becomes cluttered and unsightly. All old and new debris must be cleaned up immediately. It is necessary to look for patches and remove weeds before plants are reseeded. The application of fertilizer is necessary to improve soil pH. Excessive chemicals are unnecessary and dangerous. This type of product should only be used in places of visibly weak growth. Adding compost and testing the soil are additional steps. If the soil is too acidic, the pH has to be increased. When the spring season comes, temperatures increase and enliven dormant plants. When daylight savings comes, the days grow longer and sunlight shows more. March is the first month, so before then, a landscaper starts to prepare a spring field of grass and flowers.Perennials, such as daisies, and annuals are plants that many gardeners look forward to handling. All trees, plants and flowers need good pruning treatments, which promotes new growth and a better appearance. A new season is the best time to plan. Before contacting a landscaper, a homeowner should plan how the yard looks in the future.A healthy, colorful spring landscape looks even better with the addition of decorations, like fountains and wind chimes. Decorations improve the look and people become encouraged to care more about their gardens. Simple or elaborate water features are important items to include. Spring months are times of renewal that consists of cleaning, reorganizing and replanting. A landscaper is needed to pick and choose from different spring project ideas.

Broken branches

Broken branches shouldn’t be removed right away.

Ice, snow, hail, wind, and other winter-weather extremes often cause branches to break, altering the plant’s appearance and, possibly, its productivity.

How do I fix it? Unless a hazard exists, wait until the end of winter to prune all broken twigs and branches back to within one quarter of an inch above a live bud or to the branch collar of the nearest live branch. This pruning to reshape the plant can also stimulate new growth in the coming season.

How do I prevent it? Removing the most susceptible parts of a plant prior to the onset of winter weather can help with future breakage. Branches that appear partially dead or especially weak would qualify for early removal.

For a beautiful display of daffodils and other flowers in the spring, it’s best to plant most bulbs in the winter. Bulbs store food for plants when they’re dormant. Plants that utilize real bulbs are onions and garlic and other members of their family, lilies and tulips, daffodils, two types of iris and oxalis. A bulb is different from a corm because a corm is actually a swollen stem that’s used as a food source. A rhizome is also a stem that stores food and has nodes that send out shoots and roots. A tuber forms from a rhizome and eventually grows into stems and leaves. Iris The bulbs of iris are tough and can put forth beautiful and fragrant flowers very early in the year. The dwarf iris can grow to about six inches tall. The bulbs should be planted in a sunny spot in well drained soil. Madonna Lily This lily has been cultivated for centuries often in monasteries for medicinal purposes. The plant can grow to six feet tall and the bulbs should be planted in alkaline, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Unlike other lilies, which should be planted to three times their depth, the Madonna lily bulb should be planted close to the surface. Narcissus or Daffodil The bulbs of the beautiful daffodil should be planed at twice their own depth in a fertile, well-drained soil. They prefer a sunny position for the best flowering. The clumps should be lifted and divided every few years or so. Tulips This lovely flower, which was the subject of a craze in the Netherlands, should be planted in fertile, well drained soil in full sun. The bulbs should be planted about four inches deep. Garlic Garlic bulbs can be broken up and the individual cloves planted in rich, loamy soil. It’s best if compost is added to the soil before the cloves are planted. The bulbs are ready when the tops brown and die back.
