Power of the Pause. It’s not failing

Danny, have you considered the pure fact that your planned sucked and you hadn’t failed, but just needed to pause?”

I doubt he said “sucked” and you hadn’t failed, but just needed to pause?”

I doubt he said “sucked” but that’s how I remember my mentor/coach Paul Martinelli telling me to just “pause.”

Paul’s goal setting, planning, and achieving lesson was, and still is, a game changer.

I’ve written a lot about what I call GSPA, but hitting the pause button hasn’t been near enough on my radar as I’m thinking it needs to be. I’ve been depending on my thoughts more than my thinking (my pillar #2) by leaving some margins in my day, but not purposefully pausing. I’m thinking they’re a difference.

This thinking came up after listening to a livestream with the author of Celebration of Discipline.

The author, Richard Foster, talked about being purposeful about quiet times, having time built into the day where one was only thinking, and instead of pressing on the accelerator to do more, instead “pause long enough to be willing to reevaluate the popular assumptions of our day.”

This isn’t all new to me. I’ve developed a habit/routine of margins and pauses. I know plans always go awry and I’m not near wise enough to build into my plan the world’s battle against my intentions. Another book just came to mind…” The Lies We Believe.”

But I can prepare, I can act on what I can control (pillar 3), and recognize there’s many routes to my goal, divine intervention is real, and I can devise some really good plans, but in the end my Lord directs my paths (Proverbs26:9).

And sometimes, there’s a prolonged waiting period. But that’s another book I’m reading….”Wasting isn’t a Waste.”

Plans, Mice, and Men…

Robert Burns, in his poem "To a Mouse" suggests that despite careful planning, things often don't unfold as expected.

“The best-laid plans of mice and men ‘often’ go awry"

It suggests that despite careful planning, things often don't unfold as expected.

This phrase is the backbone of my “goals in concrete, plans in sand” methodology

The expression, “the best-laid plans of mice and men ‘often’ go awry" conveys the idea that unforeseen circumstances or unexpected events, and there are always unforeseen circumstances and unexpected events, can disrupt even the most well-thought-out intentions. It highlights the inherent uncertainty and unpredictability of life, emphasizing the need for adaptability and resilience when faced with the twists and turns that can derail one's plans.

Having your goals in concrete will serve you well as those plans go awry.

And plans ALWAYS go awry.

Maybe it’s my confirmation bias, but I think Hill was on this path with his emphasis on desire. In “Think and Grow Rich,” he mentioned goal 25 times, but desire 257 times.

But that’s another post.

To that end…desire, then goals, then plan, then action, and build on momentum.
