There's only about a week left of summer before all our Nacogdoches County kids start hitting the books again.

While we know all you parents will be excited to not hear "I'm bored!" anymore, and will be thrilled to see the utility and grocery bills go down a little, don't get in such a big rush to drop them off that you forget to be safe in school zones!

• Remember to obey all warning signs and speed limits in school zones. Cell phone use is prohibited, and could result in a $200 fine.

• Keep a wary eye out for children crossing the street near campuses.

• Follow the appropriate law when approaching a school bus on the road. Illegally passing a bus is punishable by a fine up to $1,000, and could endanger the life of a child or children.

As part of the Park Street paving project, starting at 7:00 a.m. on Thursday August 8, 2024, Park Street will be closed to through traffic from west of Richardson Street to N. Mound Street, including all side street intersections, until milling operations are completed. Local traffic will be accommodated, and Park Street will be closed to traffic through the weekend. The same closure will start Monday morning for paving operations to commence. Paving operations are expected to be completed early next week.

DISASTER RECOVERY CENTER NOW OPEN

Federal Emergency Management Agency authorities have opened a Disaster Recovery Center at the Nacogdoches County Exposition & Civic Center, 3805 NW Stallings Drive, Nacogdoches, Texas 75964.

The center is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Representatives from both FEMA and the Small Business Administration will be on hand to assist residents from Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Jasper, Jackson, Jefferson, Liberty, Orange, Matagorda, Montgomery, Nacogdoches, Polk, San Jacinto, Walker and Wharton counties impacted by storms from April 26 through June 6, and Hurricane Beryl.

No appointment is needed.

Applications are also being processed online at DisasterAssistance.gov or through the FEMA mobile App. A helpline has also been established at 800-621-3362.

An additional Disaster Recovery Center is open in Galveston County at the Galveston County Health District, 9850 Emmett F. Lowry Expressway, Texas City, Texas 77591.

The Nacogdoches County Sheriff's Office has become aware of an individual or individuals contacting people while impersonating NCSO deputies or investigators in an attempt to scam them.
Using a technique called spoofing, scammers are able to make it appear that the call is originating from an official phone number.
If you are suspicious about the nature of a call from a law enforcement agency, hang up the phone and dial the number for the agency yourself. Do not use numbers provided to you by the suspected scammer.
The sheriff's office will NEVER contact individuals requesting payment related to an offense or other legal matter.
Scammers like these will attempt to con citizens into sending them money by creating a high-pressure situation that seemingly needs to be immediately addressed. In do so, they attempt to trick the victim into not thinking rationally.
