๐ชฐ Barn Basics with Kat: All About Fly Spray
Got flies making your horse miserable? Hereโs what to look for on your fly spray bottle! ๐
Quick Knockdown: Pyrethrins are great for fast action but fade under the sun. Boost their staying power with synergists like Piperonyl butoxide. โฑ๏ธ
Sturdy Protection: Choose sprays with high concentrations of Pyrethroids like permethrin and cypermethrin. Theyโre your best bet against Florida's rugged insects. Remember, you get what you pay forโmore active ingredients, better protection! ๐ช
Natural Scents: While peppermint oil, clove oil, and citronella smell wonderful, they don't stand up long against our local critters. Theyโre good for a quick fix but not for the long haul. ๐ฟ
Know whatโs in your spray to make the best choice for your horse. ๐ด
๐ Welcome Dr. Brenna! ๐
Dr. Brenna, our UF CVM extern, has been here just a short time, and sheโs already gotten the stamp of approval from these two! ๐ด๐

๐ด Beau's Cool Down Solution! ๐
Meet Beau, a smart horse who's found the perfect way to beat the brutal Florida heatโchilling under misters his owner set up just for him! โ๏ธ
Did you know that some horses struggle with anhidrosis, a condition where they can't sweat enough to cool down? Even if you see a bit of sweat, they might still be struggling, and elevated respiratory rates are a big giveaway.
One affordable and effective solution? Outdoor patio misters! These are easy to find and can offer much-needed relief, just like they do for Beau. Check out how relaxed he is under those refreshing spraysโyou can see the relief on his face!
As we wrap up our time with University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine extern Rachel Hubbert, we want to congratulate her on making it halfway through her veterinary studies! ๐ Rachel braved the August heat and humidity โ๏ธ, tackled long days with our ambulatory team ๐ด, and brought incredible enthusiasm to every case. We wish Dr. Hubbert all the best as she continues her journey. ๐ Keep up the great work, Rachel!
๐ง Salt Block Preferences ๐ง

Date: June 20th
๐ Location: Homestead Park, Williston, FL
โฐ Time: 6:30 PM
As my time in South Africa comes to a close, I want to express my sincere thanks for the incredible experiences and support I've received.
Thank you to my husband for making this crazy idea a reality. It wasn't easy at times, but completely worth it. We'll never forget this time and the little community that we are now a part of for life. I'll certainly miss the unique daily encounters in Kruger: hearing our 'house hippo' splash in his shrinking puddle outside the kitchen door, dodging elephant manure on my jogs, trying to get Jack to properly use a slingshot so he could get over his fear of monkeys and baboons after they took his lunch at school, and listening to the bush babies and hyenas calling at night ๐ฆ๐๐.
A huge thank you to Dr. Bjorn Reininghaus and his amazing team of vet assistants: Knowledge, Greyton, Agree, and Enoch. Their dedication and passion have been truly inspiring ๐๐. Thank you for taking me under your wing and giving me the chance to experience Mpumalanga in ways I never could have from within the park.
A special thank you to the team back in Florida for keeping McCleery Equine Veterinary Service running smoothly during my absence. Jen Larson and Kat Smith have done an outstanding job managing day-to-day operations, and I'm deeply grateful for their hard work and dedication. I also want to extend my gratitude to the veterinarians who have provided excellent care to our clients in my absence: Hoof and Horn Veterinary & Acupuncture Service, Dr. Jennifer Frank Mobile Veterinary Service, Coastline Veterinary Service, and Dr. Martha Mallicote ๐ฉบ๐ฉโโ๏ธ. Your support ensured that our clients were well taken care of when our original plan changed unexpectedly.
TLDR: I'm thankful for this incredible opportunity and for the support from everyone involved, both here in South Africa and back home. Looking forward to seeing you all soon! ๐โ๏ธ
As I prepare to return home, I'm sharing my final post from the South African dip tanks. For those who have never seen it, the process of cattle leaping into dip tanks is quite impressive. Check out this video to see it in action! ๐๐ฆ
The dip tank is designed to submerge the cattle's heads, ensuring ear ticks are treated. This leap may look scary, but it's crucial for preventing the severe damage these ticks can cause. Without treatment, ticks can create large wounds, abscesses, and udder damage that makes it hard for cows to feed their calves. Not to mention the threat of tick-borne diseases like Ehrlichiosis (heartwater), Babesiosis (red water), and Anaplasmosis (gall sickness).
These dip tanks also allow for disease surveillance and early detection of serious illnesses like Rift Valley Fever, Anthrax, tuberculosis, brucellosis, and Foot-and-Mouth Disease.

Lost Goats
4/10/24 from SW 122nd St and SW 121st Ave - Archer
2 Nigerian Dwarf young bucks - Twix and Tootsie
Our 2 goats were in our fenced yard and escaped/disappeared sometime between 3 and 5:45pm on Wednesday 4/10. Please let me know if you see them, they are family pets!
The lighter colored one (Twix) is very friendly and will likely approach someone or let them approach him for pets. The darker/redder one is more skittish.
