Due to the City Council July Break, I want to remind you that while the District 9 office will be staffed and continue responding to our community, there may be a delay in the response time due to a reduction in the number of staff available throughout the month.

Please note that all other city departments will continue with their regularly scheduled services and this break only affects the Mayor & City Council offices.

We're just a few days away from 4th of July events! Celebrate locally by watching fireworks safely at one of these displays including two hosted by my colleagues, Councilmembers Domingo Candelas and Arjun Batra!

Remember that all fireworks, even those labeled "safe and sane", are illegal in San José and most of Santa Clara County. Please leave the use of fireworks to the professionals operating these events to prevent injuries, fires, and neighborhood disturbances.

This week's is Nagoya Sushi. This local gem serves a variety of fresh, delicious plates with high-quality fish. I couldn't agree more with the resident who recommended them, the owners are friendly & the menu is well-priced!

Due to recent vandalism at Lone Hill Park, the restrooms will be closed on weekdays after approximately 1 pm to limit access during the time the vandalism has been occurring. Our parks staff expect this closure to last approximately the next 3-4 weeks.

We ask for your patience as our parks staff work to resolve this issue. Thank you for your understanding!

With the 4th of July just around the corner, illegal fireworks are a major concern to the safety of our neighborhoods. All fireworks regardless of their advertised safety are dangerous and illegal to own, use, or sell in San José.

If you see illegal firework activity, fill out the online report by visiting the San José 311 website or downloading the mobile app.

SJPD has officially launched the CAM Program which provides rebates of up to $350 per San José property for the installation of security cameras! Video imaging security cameras in our neighborhoods play a crucial role in supporting law enforcement by deterring crime, vandalism, and other quality-of-life issues.

Earlier this year, I joined Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley to witness the power of community as they helped two District 9 residences by providing maintenance and electrical work in addition to painting their homes.

The majority of the low-income homeowners they serve are seniors and people with disabilities. I'm so grateful to the generous individuals who make these repairs possible for residents!

Today we celebrate all the incredible dads and father figures in our lives who make the world a brighter place. Happy Father's Day!💙

JUN 10, 2024 | City Council Public Budget Hearing 10/06/2024

Tonight 06/10 at 6 pm, City Council will conduct its final budget hearing as the last opportunity for public input on the proposed budget. Tomorrow, City Council will be engaging in a final discussion and vote to determine the final budget for our next fiscal year.

Thanks to higher than predicted revenues, we have been able to add one additional Viva Calle event, 25 more Viva Parks, and continue our Climate Smart Initiatives which are vital to reaching our sustainability goals. This year's budget also reaffirms our commitment to ending homelessness by funding both Emergency Interim Housing (EIH) and permanent affordable housing.

Additionally, we are proposing a way to save our city's fitness centers from closing. This is extremely important in combatting loneliness and social isolation in older adults which are its highest users.

Public comments may be submitted electronically to [email protected] or you may appear in person at tonight's meeting. Use this link if you would like to watch the meeting virtually:

This past weekend, I joined Mayor Matt Mahan for the State of the City address, followed by a beautification of the Japanese Friendship Garden.

I also had the privilege of recognizing our 2024 Community Hero, Tim Klaus, who organized a Walk & Roll Marathon from April 22 to May 17 to encourage students to walk or ride to school. This effort was a huge success with 73% student participation and a single-day record of 238 participants.

Tracking the rides and walks, this effort prevented 4,349 automobile trips, saving over 3,000 tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere. I hope his efforts become a model for other schools to encourage alternative transportation options for getting to school!

At this meeting, we will be reviewing the City Manager's Proposed Budget and continue the budget discussion we started at the March Office Hours meeting. Join us to ask questions about the budget or discuss any other questions you might have.

The Grand Opening of Vitalia 09/05/2024

I couldn't be more grateful to Affirmed Housing for their willingness to listen to community feedback and implement many of their suggestions into the design of District 9's newest affordable housing complex.

Of the 79 units, half are set aside for formerly unhoused individuals as supportive housing. The remaining apartments are designated for households earning up to 60% of the area median income (AMI).

This apartment is truly a welcoming, vibrant space for many of our community members to call home.
