Our Story
We created Utah Valley Pinewood Derby to provide exciting derbies that kids will love.
Both of the founders of Utah Valley Pinewood Derby are Cub Scout leaders. When it comes to keeping a group of kids entertained, we know what works and what doesn’t. When we built our track, we knew from the start that pacing and presentation are huge factors when it comes to keeping kids and parents engaged during a pinewood derby.
We designed our own software to make running the derby as efficient and intuitive as possible. The race schedule is calculated automatically. When it is a participant’s turn to race, they will see their name and a picture of their car on the big screen. After each race, the audience watches an instant replay on the screen while the computer uploads the results to a Google spreadsheet. With this automation, we can run lots of races in a short time, keeping up the pace and preventing the audience from losing interest. In a typical derby, we average about one race every 45 to 60 seconds. We get most races done in under 30 minutes, allowing some time for races just for fun. By keeping the derby to less than an hour, the participants and their families leave still buzzing with excitement, rather than exhaustion.
Our focus on simplicity and fun doesn’t mean we skimp on accuracy. Our track was built to precise specifications and was carefully sanded and finished so as not to give one lane an advantage over another. Our timing system has an accuracy of 0.00005 seconds and can detect a first-place finish by less than a hundredth of an inch. We don’t usually emphasize extreme competitiveness, but we could if we needed to.
