The Psycho-Dynamics of Diagnosis, Case Formulation, and Supervision:
A Clinical Workshop with Nancy McWilliams, Ph.D.
Saturday, January 27, 9-4
Join us on Saturday, January 27 for a clinical workshop with Nancy McWilliams. Best known for her work formulating a psycho-dynamic approach to diagnosis, Dr. McWilliams will focus in particular on the clinical implications and importance of diagnostic assessment and case formulation. In her morning presentation, she will describe the dimensional aspect of diagnostic thinking in psychoanalysis, including the idea that personality can be organized at healthy, neurotic, borderline, or psychotic levels, with an emphasis on what the clinical implications would be of understanding a person as structured at one level or another.
She will argue that attempts to understand personality in terms of traits has been problematic (even in the DSM Alternative Personality Disorder Section, which is dimensional but limited by its trait focus), and argue instead for the value of understanding personality in terms of internal conflicts and repetitive object-relational themes. She will offer numerous clinical examples drawn from her own work with patients. In the afternoon, she will pivot to her more recent work on psychoanalytic supervision, and will model her supervisory process in response to a case presentation by recent LAISPS graduate Victoria Curea. Finally, following a brief break, she will conclude with an in-depth presentation of a particularly challenging patient of her own, underscoring the role of diagnostics and case formulation in terms of personality structure and relational dynamics rather than personality traits.

MARILIA AISENSTEIN
SATURDAY, JUNE 10, 2023 10:00 A.M. – 1:00 P.M.
3 CME/CE CREDITS
Join us online on Saturday, June 10 as we explore the breakdown of the link between mind and body that results in “psychosomatic” illnesses with Marilia Eisenstein, a founder of the Paris School of Psychosomatics.
Dr. Aisenstein’s work represents a uniquely French Freudian contribution to the investigation of primitive breakdowns and their somatic consequences.
In this workshop, Dr. Aisenstein will discuss two very recent contributions. In “The Allergic Object Relationship,” and a second paper, “Destruction of Thought Processes."
In preparation for this workshop, we will be offering two online study groups to read and discuss Dr. Aisenstein’s work. The papers and study group are free to those who register for the workshop.

This meeting will focus on larger structural changes to the basic frame of our s*xual and gender identities, changes that have been underway for years and accelerated by the pandemic. Specifically, David will explore the dramatic effects for psychoanalytic treatment of the evolution of identity and identification (particularly s*x and gender) becoming increasingly self-determined. Drawing on the work of Lacan, Bion, as well as others from outside of psychoanalysis, David will describe these rapid and recent changes in s*xual and gender identity. Traditional oedipal structures, for example, have been called into question at a time when the fantasy (and lived experience) of separateness and self-creation has become the new foundation of the self. The talk will focus in particular on: 1) the critical changes in the linguistic structures of modern society that both reflect and drive this process, and 2) an effort to distinguish between our “knowing from affect” (the body, the right brain hemisphere, the hysterical) and “knowing from thought” (the symbolic, the intellectual, the left brain hemisphere, and the obsessional). Understanding these differentiations will clarify what I believe has influenced these recent changes in our self-definitions. A third way of knowing, that of “being-with” is offered, and clinical examples of these distinctions will be explored.
OPEN HOUSE THIS SUNDAY!!!!! March 12 from 11-1pm

Bbout this episode Thais says: Our society is currently grappling with an intense fascination with narcissism. It feels like in some ways it is everywhere, with thousands if not millions of articles, social media posts, and books being written about the topic. The word is used so much that we have in many ways lost sight of its original purpose. If everything is narcissism, is anything narcissism? In this episode I bring psychotherapist Meredith Redding onto the podcast to help us understand more about what narcissism really means and how we can understand it in a way that maintains its philosophical integrity.
