Fireworks Safety: Cat Edition

1. Make a Safe Space: Your cat may prefer to hide, so set up a comfortable space just for them.

2. Keep Your Cat Indoors: Even if you have an outdoor kitty, offering your garage or home to them during the fireworks is less scary for them to be away from all the commotion.

3. Update Microchip Info: Make sure their microchip is up to date and/or wearing a visible ID tag with your information

4. Drown Out the Sound: Mask the noise! Make sure windows are closed, curtains drawn, low level TV/music to cover the sounds of fireworks.

5. Use Stress Reliever Products: Talk to your vet about medications, over the counter supplements, or holistic remedies like CBD for stress relief.

6. Current Photo: Just incase they get lost

7. Keep them Home! : Hiring a cat sitter or having someone check on them camake a world of difference and calm your kitty.

Did you know? You can test this easily by placing multiple water bowls around and see which becomes the favorite. I've tested this with probably 50-80 cats so far and the results still fascinate me- The majority of cats will leave the one next to their food untouched, if given the choice!

Urgent notice regarding cats and kittens in Ocala.

***URGENT*** We are currently suspending cat intakes and adoptions at the shelter as a precaution for brief period of time due to Feline Panleukopenia.

Panleukopenia is common in animal shelters, especially during kitten season, which is in full swing right now.

This virus infects the gastrointestinal system and can potentially lead to death. We are taking every precaution necessary to ensure the safety of the 418 cats/kittens in our care.

Please remember our important programs such as Don’t Kitnap and Wait til 8. Kittens are the most vulnerable population in a shelter environment and are extremely susceptible to disease. Kittens have the best chance at survival with their moms or in a home environment. Bringing kittens to a shelter significantly increases their risk of illness or death.

Anyone who finds kittens is urged to leave them with their mother. For confirmed cases of abandoned kittens, please call the shelter to discuss the safest way to get vaccinations (if 4 weeks of age or older).

Emergencies will be accommodated in the safest way possible. However, Animal Services is requesting to call them at 352-671-8700, before bringing cats or kittens to the shelter.

Dog operations and adoptions are continuing as normal as they are not impacted.

AND Please, PLEASE if you leave your pets with someone have a system in place for your family pets to be kept away from any open doorways. Put barrier gates around every doorway or keep them contained in a safe area. Even the most well behaved pets can freak and run away during fireworks.

If at all possible choose a professional pet sitter who is experienced in caring for pets during fireworks holidays.

Hello Everyone. My name is Tilly. Despite the best laid plans... I outlived my mom, yesterday. She had planned so well when she got me 17 years ago.... infact, I think I have been surprising her with each birthday these past few years (heehee).

I digress.

Part of mom's plan was the animal loving family that surrounded her. But I am going to be honest, ya'll... I am NOT going to like this new lifestyle. It's an active home and the other pets are young and spunky. This is not for me. I have put in a request with upper management for transfer. I want to find a new mom or dad (or both) that is older and quiet.

I have plenty of pep in my step and I am in good health, but let's face it, folks: I'm pretty old. I need a home that understands my needs and can cater to them. It only makes sense.

I am staying with mom's grandchildren, right now. They love me but THANK GOD they can see that I would be much happier in the RIGHT home. I was so afraid they would hold onto me out of a sense of duty to my mom.... but then I heard them on the phone with the Quality of Life Rehab & Foster, Inc. team. They have a plan to find me my next chapter! I like the way I heard it said:

Someone else needs me, now.

I like that. And I promise to be the best, sweetest, most adorable little poodle you have ever met.

It should be known that I am cat, dog and kid friendly (though I am small and frail at my age). I weigh between 7 and 10 pounds. Ive been groomed, regularly and last saw my veterinarian 6 months ago. I'm not on any kind of medications.and have no health concerns. I'm housebroken and well mannered.

I am the total package... you will just have to accept that I have someone waiting on me in Heaven and I can't stay here, forver.

Please don't be sad for me or my mom. We had a great life together and I am excited to see what my sunset holds. I am in Ocala FL.

I'm going to take a nap, now. I hope that my future momma or daddy sees this tonight because I know you're out there.

🍄 CANCER HATES MUSHROOMS 🐾

This was the conclusion of Pennsylvania State University researchers who analyzed mushroom consumption on cancer risk, involving 19,500 patients.

The subjects with the highest mushroom consumption - (2/3 of an ounce of mushrooms daily) - had a 45% lower risk of developing cancer.

Another study by Bastyr University, conducted on a group of dogs with an aggressive cancer (hemangiosarcoma), found that feeding a Turkey Tail mushroom supplement extended lifespan by over 50%! While more research needs to be done on mushrooms, these findings are incredibly exciting for pet owners!

Sadly, many of us who’ve had cats have been touched by evil C-word.

CANCER KILLS AN ESTIMATED 30% OF ALL CATS. This fact is absolutely stunning and in recent years the trend is only getting worse.

We certainly cannot yet say that mushrooms treat cancer, but there is sufficient evidence to say they greatly support the immune system of cats, dogs, and humans.
