I have to give a special shoutout to Larry at in New Castle, DE. I walked into the parts department and explained that I would be making a cake for A. Duie Pyle and needed pictures of the Volvo Trucks VNR 300. He allowed me to look over his shoulder and point to the pictures that wanted and emailed them to me. Then he directed me to the lot so I could get pictures of a 53’ trailer. It was so nice to have such a willing participant for this project!
The construction of the base began with 1/2” plywood, 2” strapping and 1/4” plywood. These were screwed together so the base would not flex when it was lifted. The trailer was built on 1/2” plywood covered with aluminum foil and the cab was built on 1/4” plywood covered with aluminum foil. The aluminum makes it food safe. The trailer and the cab each had two 1/4” stainless steel rods, that had been sterilized, attached to the base that lined up with the boards to keep them from moving during transport. Hubby’s expertise was beyond valuable during the construction of this. I never could have pulled this off alone!
When my hubby and I went to Lowes to buy the lumber for the base of the tractor trailer cake he was trying to explain how he was going to build it. I couldn’t quite grasp the concept so he decided to draw a picture for me and asked if I had a pen. The look on his face when I handed him the pen I keep in my purse was priceless!
Funny story, we have a walk-in refrigerator outside that we use when we harvest, fruits and vegetables. It’s the only place that would fit this cake. After I got the cake set on the board and bulk of the decorations finished we went to carry it outside and discovered we had miscalculated the measurement and couldn’t get it through the inside garage doorway🤦♀️ fortunately is was a minor miscalculation and could be remedied by removing the door. So there we were, Friday at almost midnight removing the door from the hinges so we could carry this outside. We had to take the inside garage door off its hinges so we could carry it out to the walk-in!
Yes, it really is a cake!!! 53” from bumper to Bumper to be exact m. Just to give you a sense of scale, the blue ruler in the center of the prints is 12” long 😳 Shout out to Leslie Sleesman for your graphic design assistance in getting this to scale so it would print properly and to Kennett Copy & More for printing this large scale so I had templates to use for guidance.
