Did you know? Carbon captured from oil and gas operations can be safely stored deep underground by injection wells or reused to manufacture building materials. Carbon capture technology allows us to produce the oil and gas Californians need while simultaneously achieving emissions goals. 🌳
Did any of these facts stand out to you? How about the average salary of an oil and gas worker compared to that of other industries? Did you know Kern County is home to 76% of California's oil-producing wells? Or maybe the fact that 8 of the top 10 taxpayers in the county are energy companies? 👀

"Summit unites diverse energy developers"
"President and CEO Catherine Reheis-Boyd of the Western States Petroleum Association trade group argued the state need the industry to carry out carbon management and should, therefore, stop attacking what she called the cleanest-operating oil producers in the world.
She insisted no industry is more committed to the transition to clean energy, and added that it's frustrating to hear carbon management proponents say, "We like what you're doing. We just don't want you doing it. You're an oil company."

"Kern moved down in oil production nationwide: Why?"
Kern County remains the energy capital of California. Still, when it comes to moving down on the nationwide charts - the Western States Petroleum Association says many factors go into it. Still, the biggest reason behind the drop is state regulations.
Read the full article here:
Kern moved down in oil production nationwide: Why? Kern County has stayed on top in California in 2022 in terms of Oil and Gas production. However, nationwide, we have moved down.
So, what exactly is carbon capture and storage (CCS)? It's a long name, a simple concept. Carbon is a naturally occurring element above, below, and all around (and within!) us, without which life as we know it would not exist. During energy extraction processes, carbon from the earth is captured before it enters the atmosphere and stored back into the ground. Leave it where you found it, right? 🙌

Happy Halloween! 👻
ICYMI: Earlier this month, one of Kern County's leading energy producers, Aera Energy LLC, announced its first large-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) project. CarbonFrontier will be operational by 2030 and capture up to 1.6 million metric tons of CO2 annually. The captured carbon will reduce the company's footprint by the equivalent of 30,000 households.

Councilmember, business owner and Taft native Patty Gray is strongly opposing the Bakersfield Climate Action Plan (CAP). Councilmember Gray accurately explained to her colleagues at August's meeting that Kern County produces close to 80% of California's natural gas, and that our state's electrical grid is not able to support the effects of this Plan.
“We don’t even have the electrical grid to support all this. We’re already having blackouts. I had one last week at my house,” Gray said.

“We don’t allow for domestic drilling or even increases in oil production. So we don’t know where we’re going to necessarily get the gas or the oil from here in California. So we just face over $6 a gallon gas prices, which is significantly higher than the national average,” Gearhart said.

Thanks to Corey O'Leary from 23ABC Bakersfield for sitting down with KCE Director Tracy Leach to discuss the latest attack on Kern County's oil and gas industry. Bakersfield City officials are considering a Climate Action Plan (CAP) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by limiting and ultimately prohibiting the use of natural gas.

What's up with California's sky-high gas prices?!
California is notorious nationwide, and perhaps even globally, for being a quick-to-legislate, tax-happy state. Thanks to the second-highest gasoline tax in the nation, Californians pay more at the pump than almost anywhere else! This, combined with California's mandated "special" gasoline blend (more expensive to produce than other types), environmental program costs (adding about 30 cents/gallon), and importing resources that we already have underfoot, adds up to the highest gasoline price in the nation today. California ranks #1 for most expensive regular gasoline at $5.080 per gallon, while the national average is only $3.825.
The importance of supporting grassroots organizations like KCE, showing up to events, contacting your local legislators to voice concerns and support, and voting wisely cannot be overstated.

The latest donation, a "maker space," will allow engineering students to bring their designs to life.
