Tomorrow, Myosenji Temple members will begin their journey home from their Buddhist pilgrimage to Taisekiji, the Head Temple of Nichiren Shoshu.
Despite August being typhoon season in Japan, they were fortunate to experience a few sunny days ☀️, lots of clouds ☁️, and summer heat 🌞, escaping the heavy rains 🌧️. While they may not have been able to take lots of photos of the beautiful grounds of Taisekiji, they enjoy delicious Japanese cuisine 🍣🍜. Safe travels to all 17 Myosenji Temple members on their return from this August Tozan! ✈️
FINDING PEACE THROUGH CHANTING
(brief experience from a Myosenji member)
Nichiren Daishonin compared chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo to a lion's roar, symbolizing strength and overcoming challenges. It resonates more with me than meditation.
Focusing on the Gohonzon (object of worship) during chanting creates a sense of control and inner peace. Unlike relying solely on my own mind, chanting allows me to create new, positive mental habits and fosters compassion for myself and others. Through it, I feel connected to the wisdom of the Buddha and experience real change in my life.

Each month Myosenji Temple's Chief Priest conducts the OKO Ceremony followed by a lecture on Buddhism. In Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism, we conduct the Oko Ceremony to repay our debt of gratitude for the profound benefit of the three treasures: Nichiren Daishonin (the Buddha), the Dai-Gohonzon (the Law), and Nikko Shonin (the priesthood).
The ceremony begins with an offering of traditional foods to the three treasures (Kenzen) and is then followed by the recitation of the Hoben and Juryo chapters of the Lotus Sutra. After chanting (Daimoku) and offering the silent prayers, the chief priest gives a lecture on true Buddhism. Priests and lay believers enhance their faith, practice, and study through this ceremony and renew their determination to accomplish worldwide propagation of true Buddhism in order to repay their debt of gratitude.
We were fortunate to welcome our new Assistant Priest, Rev. Kohashi to Myosenji Temple on Sunday. We are thrilled he has arrived!

OFFERINGS TO THE BUDDHA
Yesterday, our Chief Priest, Rev Sakabe, conducted the Otanjo-e Ceremony, to celebrate our Founder, Nichiren Daishonin’s birthday. It is a tradition to offer food to the Buddha. For this ceremony, a special celebratory dish was offered called “Sekihan” in Japanese. It uses red rice because Japanese regard red as a joyful color. The dish is made with red rice and beans.
Nichiren Daishonin, the founder of Nichiren Shoshu in 13th century Japan, received many food offerings from believers. We know this because of the many personal Gosho letters he sent to believers thanking them for their food offerings.
The round crane mark is the official emblem of Nichiren Shoshu, the orthodox sect of Nichiren Daishonin. To learn more about Nichiren Shoshu and the Head Temple Taisekiji, please visit here, https://www.nichirenshoshu.or.jp/eng/index.html
This symbol is on our Liturgy of Nichiren Shoshu book, the Sutra book, Nichiren Shoshu butsugu (altar accessories), and in Nichiren Shoshu temples in Japan and around the world.
This emblem is a sacred symbol to Nichiren Shoshu tradition. Out of respect for this tradition, Nichiren Shoshu believers do not use it for personal use on social media channels or in any other ways.
Each month we invite guests to visit Myosenji Temple for our Introductory Series. You can participate in-person or via our live stream. Register today https://nstmyosenji.com/IntroSeries/ to learn more about Buddhism and the Buddhist practice of chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo.
