Walker|West music instructor and band leader Kevin Washington will lead an ensemble of Walker|West faculty, including Jack Breen, Kavyesh Kaviraj, Ted Olsen, and Solomon Parham, to build a musical soundscape in concert with the poets.
This dynamic performance will delight both artists and audiences alike with an eclectic, dynamic flow of genres, moods, and styles.

On September 7th, Saint Paul Almanac will launch a year-long celebration of its 20th year anniversary. An America’s Cultural Treasures award recipient, Saint Paul Almanac is a literary arts nonprofit organization that builds and supports an inclusive community of new, emerging, and established poets, writers, editors, and videographers for collaborative change.
Founded in 1988, Walker|West Music Academy is one of the oldest African American community conservatories in the United State. It continues to foster a diverse community rooted in the African American cultural experience, where everyone from infants to elders can explore, perform, and grow through music. A Regional Cultural Treasures award recipient, the work of Walker|West Music Academy continues to flourish. Due to a successful three-year capital campaign that began in 2021, “The Power of Music to Heal Our Community,” Walker|West will move into its new state-of-the art facility in the Rondo community during the fall of 2024.

Poetry Encuentro: A Latine Poetry Gathering (09/09/23)
Palabristas, in collaboration with the Minnesota Humanities Center and the Indigenous Roots Cultural Arts Center, are proud to invite our Latine community to MN’s first ever Poetry Encuentro. All writing levels are welcomed and encouraged, even if you've never written poetry or prose before! This gathering will offer an opportunity for writers of all levels to break bread, produce and perform together in a shared space on the grounds of the beautiful Minnesota Humanities Center.

We are inviting our gente of MN based Latine writers, poets and community members to partake in what will be a historic and memorable encuentro celebrating the written and spoken word! The event will feature welcoming and encouraging spaces to share your work, and writing workshops led by teaching artists, working poets, and professional writers. We will close the day with an Open Mic/Poetry Cafe. Come vibe with us!
*Registration is required for this full day event and includes breakfast, lunch and all workshop supplies. Use the code COMMUNITY to waive the $30 participation fee.
