Although we are almost at the end of Pride Month, I am proud of our LGBTQ residents year-round. They enrich my life and the life of our community.

Thank you to Johnson County Community College for hosting Friday’s Pride@JCCC Social and Program. Chair Kelly presented a copy of the county’s Pride Month proclamation.

It was fun to mingle with lots of friends - old and new - and hear inspiring words from our elected officials.

Congratulations to the City of Overland Park, Kansas Government on the completion of new Fire Station 41 at 75th and Conser. This rebuilt station houses both fire services and Johnson County MED-ACT, providing residents with fast, dependable response to emergencies. It is also produces most of its own electricity through solar panels on the roof!

Johnson County wants and needs a homeless shelter. But who will pay $500K a year? 28/06/2024

Homelessness is expensive for cities and counties. By some estimates, a person who is chronically unhoused can cost taxpayers over $35,000 per year for medical treatment, emergency room visits, incarceration, and police intervention.

Yesterday, the Johnson County Board of Commissioners, by a vote of 4-3 approved the next step to bring a homeless service center to reality.

To solve this community-wide problem, we need support from all sectors of our county. Please encourage your local cities to step up and join the county to get this project over the finish line.

Johnson County wants and needs a homeless shelter. But who will pay $500K a year? Johnson County is working on purchasing a $6 million hotel to convert into a needed homeless shelter. But how to fund the shelter each year is causing tension.

Once again, I succumbed to the lure of a beautiful painting at the JCDS Emerging Artists program. I couldn’t resist this gorgeous interior scene painted by artist Ryan Sikes.

Ryan’s works feature bright neon colors and bold black lines. There is something Picasso-esque about this striking painting.

I loved being able to get a photo with the artist! The Emerging Artist studio is located in the Johnson County KS Arts and Heritage Center - stop by sometime!

New Century project cuts CO2 emissions, churns out thousands of plant-based butter spreads 11/06/2024

Did you know that some of your favorite plant-based spreads are made right here in Johnson County?

Upfield, located at New Century, KS, (near Gardner) makes “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter”, “Country Crock”, and my favorite “Brummell and Brown”!

Now Upfield is partnering with another company to reduce their CO2 emissions. Way to go, Upfield!

04/06/2024

As County Commissioner for District 4, I take seriously my responsibility to approve a county budget that responsibly and appropriately funds county services, including public safety.

Recent accusations that the Board of County Commissioners is "de-funding" the Sheriff's Department are not true.

The Sheriff's budget has steadily and significantly increased over the last ten years by almost $109 million (see graph below). The proposed budget for 2025 will increase the Sheriff's budget by another $5 million.

The Sheriff's Office is the largest taxpayer funded department in the county's budget. Asking questions about how this budget is spent does not mean that the BOCC does not support the work of the Sheriff's Department. We are fulfilling our duty to provide transparency and accountability.

Proposed shelter could cost $1.5 million each year to operate 17/05/2024

I was very encouraged by yesterday’s update on the status of the Housing Resources Center (aka, shelter).

Highlights include:
- reStart Inc. is the recommended operator
- Hotel is in moderate condition, Denny’s in poor shape
- Goal to submit application for Special Use Permit to City of Lenexa by July 1
- Deed restriction will give Johnson County government oversight responsibility for 10 years
- Staff will come back to BOCC in June to confirm reStart as owner/operator, estimated renovation costs, and reStart’s plans for operating revenue.

Proposed shelter could cost $1.5 million each year to operate The KC nonprofit recommended to operate a proposed shelter in Lenexa would need about $1.5 million a year to operate it.
