Carol of the Bells/Away in a Manger - Tabitha Raines Merry Christmas! These are two of favorite Christmas songs, I've always loved the dark sound of "Carol of the Bells'', and the beautiful melody of "Away in a...
One thousand miles to rock:
There was this kid a long time ago in a place far away. He played a little guitar and sang in a couple rock bands. He was a traveler. He drove around the country and played his guitar and sang in whatever band he could either join or throw together. Music was his entire life and reason to be.
One day the kid decided to leave town to track down a former drummer friend. They had gone to school together and played in several bands together. They each seemed to have an incredibly strong drive to play rock & roll day and night. The drummer was living 1000 miles away but to the kid, it was time to track him down and see if he wanted to jam.
The kid packed up his belongings into his car and ht the road. The kid mostly owned band gear. He had a P.A, a guitar amp, a guitar and some clothing.
About 900 miles into the trip, the kid realized he had left his guitar behind. He loved the guitar but resigned himself to buying another as soon as possible. He was way too far away to turn back.
He rolled up to the drummers house first thing on a Friday morning. The kid didn't have a guitar and as fate would have it, the drummer had sold his drums, The kid had spotted a pawn shop a few miles from the drummers house so they headed there. At the shop they had one guitar. The kid bought it. The drummer still had no drums.
Sunday morning the kid got a newspaper and checked the want ads. A drum set for sale! The kid took the drummers truck and went and bought the drums. When he got back the drummer was ecstatic. It was a beautiful set.
The drummer set up the drums and they played a few songs. The magic was still there. Together they had played a lot of shows and spent countless hours practicing. They both had confidence in their ability to rock. They spent the rest Sunday playing all the songs they knew.
Now Monday, they both agreed they needed a bass player. They also agreed if they bought a bass guitar and a bass amp, the prospects of finding a bass player would increase as well. They headed to he music store and bought a bass and amp.
On the way back to the drummers house, the kid suggested they stop at a little tiki hut bar he had spotted and have a brew. The bartender, the kid and the drummer were the only people in the bar. They sipped their brews and mostly talked of getting a bassist. Putting an ad in the paper or whatever. As they pondered the future, the drummer said, "The music just changed". The kid listened closer and sure enough, a short time later, the music did change. The drummer asked the bar tender if someone was upstairs playing a guitar. The bartender said there was indeed a person upstairs playing guitar.
The kid and the drummer headed upstairs. There was a guy strumming away to a random acoustic song, all alone, a guitar case open with a few dollars in it. The kid and the drummer both threw in a $20 in the case. The guitarist stopped playing to say thank you. He said the few dollars already in the case were his. He had put them there as seed money. The kid asked him if he knew how to play bass. The guitarist was interested. He said he had no contract with the tiki bar, they let him play there for free. The kid and the drummer loaded him up and headed back to the drummers house.
The guitar player was a pretty good bass player. the kid taught him a lot of songs in a short time. He could also sing good backing vocals. He was unemployed so the drummer got him a job working for his uncle with a phone call.
Within four days, the kid had put together a viable band. With the help of God, all is possible. The kid had a guardian angel. The kid had a rock & roll band.
You cant stop rock & roll and you can only hope to contain the kid.

The Kid At The Fire:
There was this kid a long time ago in a place far away. He played a little guitar and sang in a couple rock bands. He was a traveler. He drove around the country and played his guitar and sang in whatever band he could either join or throw together. Music was his entire life and reason to be.
One night when he was living in a little beach town, he decided to go for a night time beach stroll. He packed an acoustic guitar with him just in case he felt inspired along the way. Hitting the sand, he spotted a campfire in the distance and figured to head toward the light.
The fire was petty large. As he approached he noticed there were about 30 to 40 people around the fire. Some playing on the beach and some in the water. A few of the fire people asked the kid if he would like to join their party and gave him a beer. The kid never turned down a party invitation. He had nothing to do. One of the girls asked him if he would play them a song. The kid did play songs and agreed to play them a song. He uncased the guitar and gave it a quick tune up. There were a lot of girls there so he thought a slow pretty song would do the trick. He launched in to "Lost In Love" by Air Supply. The fire people and the people on the beach slowly gathered around as the kid magically worked his way through the beautiful song. The people in the water also gravitated towards the kid at the fire. Some of the girls joined in with the kid and sang the backing vocals. It sounded great. After a few more songs and a few more brews, one of the girls said she would like to hear a country style, good time drinking song. The kid started in to "Swinging" by John Anderson. The kid knew that one and started in on his guitar, accompanied by hoots and hollers. The girls who had been singing the background vocals to his earlier songs kicked in and went pro. They hit every note perfect and their harmonies were spot on. The girls sounded like angels. It sounded so amazing the kid could feel the goosebumps rising on his arm hairs. Hairs standing on end, the kid wrapped up the song. The kid did not know anyone at the campfire. To the kid it was a completely random occurrence at a campfire on a beach in a town that was not his own. The people all knew each other but none had met the kid before this night. They asked him to play it again. He obliged. The kid was honored that they appreciated his song skills and they fact the had invited a stranger to join them at their fire on the beach. After the second time through, the girls begged for a third. He obliged once more. The girls sounded like angels. The kid did not want to quit. The kid was wishing the song would never end and this night would go on forever.
But alas, all songs and all nights must come to an end. Such is the life of the kid.
True story. The names have been changed to protect the guilty.
RIP Myles. Thanks for the cool jams.
