Appreciating "the Little things"
LOVE IN THE LITTLE THINGS ❤️
We buried my father-in-law this morning.
He was 84.
While gazing at his coffin, I asked myself, “Did his life contain a message for me?”
Yes. It was this: "Love in the little things.”❤️
Last month, I arrived from Europe to preach in Milan. And from Italy, I led a pilgrimage to Fatima, Lourdes, etc.
Yes, you could say I do "big" things.
After landing in Manila, I rode my bike and saw Daddy Ruben in front of his house, doing what he always did at 7am.
He was holding a broom, cleaning the sidewalk from leaves. He always had this long-standing battle with fallen leaves.😂
I say this because one other morning, I saw him holding a very long pole, trying to dislodge a dried-up giant leaf hanging from the telephone wires. Or were they electric? 🤪
After failing to remove the leaf with the pole, Daddy convinced me we get the ladder from inside the house. And we propped it up in the middle of the road. 😎
As I climbed up with shaking legs while the octogenarian was holding the ladder steady, I really wondered if what we were doing was dangerous. Or illegal.🤣
Thankfully, after a few yanks and tugs and sideway maneuvers, “Operation Leaf Removal” was a resounding success. Daddy was happy.
But in my mind, it didn’t make sense. What be bothered by a single leaf hanging from a wire?
In one sense, Daddy and I lived in very different worlds. I’m always on stage, cameras on me, speaking to thousands. But Daddy had no camera or spotlight on him. He just did the little things every day.
Like what? After cleaning the sidewalk, he’d have breakfast with his sweetheart. And lunch with his sweetheart. And dinner with his sweetheart. And be available for his grandchildren whenever they needed him.
I imagine what happened when he died. He stood before God. And God asked him the simple question that He will ask every human: “DID YOU LOVE?”
And I picture Daddy answer, “Lord, I don’t know. I just did the little things…”
And God smiled and said, “In love, there is no such thing as little. Everything becomes big and beautiful. Come my son and enter into my Paradise.”🙏
