The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, has scheduled aerial mosquito treatment on July 15th, over the federal property on Craney Island. Eastern Aviation LLC – the district’s contractor – will spray granular larvicide to target developing mosquito larvae in the area. Targeting developing larvae, the treatment will be sprayed by a crop-duster style aircraft.

If weather conditions prevent spraying on July 15th, the makeup date will be July 16th. Beekeepers in affected areas do not need to keep bees covered during spraying operations, as the chemical used does not affect bees.

The Portsmouth Mosquito Hotline provides continuous updates on all aerial mosquito spraying in the area and can be reached at 757-393-8666. For updates on scheduled spraying, please follow on Facebook at and on Twitter at .

Common summer w**ds!* You might spot these w**ds outside right now. Remember to w**d unwanted plants out before they set the seeds that will remain in your landscape for next year!

*Of course, w**ds are in the eye of the beholder. These plants might not bother you and that's fine (though invasives like Japanese knotw**d should be removed). A w**d can be any plant growing where you don't want it to!

Crabgrass - Although smooth crabgrass typically acts as an annual, it may persist as a perennial. Typically, smooth crabgrass germinates in spring, grows during the summer, sets seed in the fall, and dies in the winter. Smooth crabgrass can withstand close mowing heights and is highly competitive with desirable turfgrass

Bermudagrass - A wiry perennial grass with creeping stolons and rhizomes. Foliage is gray-green to bluish green and forms dense mats. As a desirable turfgrass, bermudagrass is typically maintained at less than 1 inch mowing height. Plants grow during summer and produce seedheads through mid to late summer.

Japanese stiltgrass - Stiltgrass readily invades disturbed shaded areas like floodplains that are prone to natural scouring, and areas subject to mowing, tilling and other soil disturbing activities.

Spotted spurge -

Wild violet- Flowers are the typical violet type and are white with yellow and purple markings. Flowers are born on long stalks. The plant is more stemy than other violets and grows to over 10 in tall. Roots smell like wintergreen gum when crushed.

Smooth pigw**d - The small greenish flowers occur in terminal spikes. The male and female flowers occur in different places, the males on the terminal spikes, and the females in smaller spikes of flowers at the leaf axils.

Common purslane - Common purslane is an annual that grows rapidly in spring and summer. It thrives under dry conditions but also competes well in irrigated situations. Plants prefer loose, nutrient-rich, sandy soil.

Jimsonw**d - IDENTIFYING CHARACTERISTICS
Strong scent is emitted from leaves and stems; fruit is a spiny capsule, and a white trumpet shaped flower. A major w**d of many agronomic crops this plant also has a reputation of being toxic and having narcotic effects when ingested.

Japanese knotw**d - The stems are smooth and swollen at the joints where the leaves grow. The stem above each joint has a thin membranous sheath (ocrea).

Do you mow too low? Mowing your grass too short can create more w**ds and, if you remove too much leaf blade at once, can damage your grass! Keep cool-season grasses between 2-3 inches.

Mow like a pro by keeping mower blades sharp, returning clippings to your lawn, and raising cutting heights in spring/early summer.

Learn more about mowing: https://ext.vt.edu/lawn-garden/turfandgardentips/tips/mowing.html?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR0Mq82crJm1oz1zBkmPv_LiEfaZ6bJrS3iPQciBtJ1YAS6C-PEnJHOzixo_aem_En7KawqOZiXJOfflNW8Jgg

Mow like a pro
There is nothing done more frequently in landscape maintenance than mowing the lawn--and nothing that is done with a greater frequency of mistakes either!
Do:
Keep mower blades sharp: The quickest way to improve lawn quality AND turf health is to clip it with a sharp blade
Mow cool-season grasses to 2-3 inches
Raise cutting height for cool-season turfgrass in late spring/early summer to maximize tolerance to environmental and pest pressure.
Return clippings to your turf: Clippings are nothing more than organic fertilizer for your lawn,
Don’t:
Cut turf too short: If your lawn has a white hue rather than a green color after you mow, it is a good bet that you are cutting too low.
Remove more than 1/3rd of the leaf blade at any mowing event.
Don't mow too low! Diagrams show grass blades at 2-3 inches with sunlight shining on overlapping blades vs. grass cut to below 2 inches with sunlight penetrating to ground and shining on a w**d sprout.
