In Week 2 on our class on discipleship we discussed God's efforts to reconcile with Himself to mankind. The gospel isn't about what we did to reconcile our relationship with God, but what He did so we could be reconciled to Him.
We cannot be short-term disciples relying on a fall-back plan "just in case" thing don't go as "we" intend. We are called to leave our old life behind and fully commit to following Jesus.
